Good luck w/ $150....
A "fair" market price for an install is around $250-$300. But you're right, $400 is way too high.
You may think this is just a simple spring install, but the work involved is the same as if you were installing new struts too. You have to take half the suspension components apart, pop out the springs, set in the new springs, put the strut/spring back together, then put that whole assembly back into the car, make sure everything is put back together. It's pretty involved, not terribly difficult, just takes time. In a shop, TIME = MONEY. I would try and find someone around you who is willing to help you out, or just try it yourself w/ a buddy or something. I did it with a few other guys in about 5 hours w/ no spring compressor. 2 tires, a wrench, and some balls... Luckly, the main guy doing it was very seasonsed in working in unorthodox ways, so it wasn't a problem. We all just ran for cover as the springs popped out. Thank god it was pretty uneventful.

I went through this too when I put my tanabe's on. Everyone in Cali or NY will tell you you can get them put on for $4 and some envelopes, they know a guy...

Most reputable shops will probably be somewhere between $75 - $90 per wheel.

Maybe you should park the car away from the shop when getting quotes
They see those mods and add 2 boat payments to your estimate!

And -guessing- you are putting in lowering springs- with any real miles on the stock shocks- you can say goodbye to them soon after this mod.
Replace springs and shocks as pairs made to work together

See top of this page click Off Topic then look for Sponsored Sales for vendors that are sponsors of this website for us and know their stuff
Excellerate and MrHeelToe are the main spring and shock guys or look in private sales for some used units

While I normally go with Fsttyms1 on things TL

I must say that if you have ANY concerns or lack the proper tools and experience
Go to a professional- The spring compressor can come loose and kill or maim bystanders
I worked in a shop and saw mechanics have serious accidents.
My wife works Emergency Room and had great stories of car repair wounds- chest injuries, fingers smashed etc.
Some jobs anyone can handle with the guidance of the board.
Brakes and shocks are so important that if you are unsure- spend the money to have it done safely and correctly
Is cheaper than the deduc for the ER visit on your insurance- assuming you have health insurance in America these days

Find a local import specialist and have them done.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but it's true. I rented a spring compressor and did the job (front shock and struts) with my Father on my old car. Well the spring compressor wasn't the kind with the box-like frame around it. Anyhow one of the, claws (yeah it was kinda old-school) had a small chip on the edge of it. Anyhow, when we torqued them down i guess it got a little uneven and the spring came off and hit my Father right in the lip, knocked out two teeth and then rebounded from his face and smacked me square in the forehead. If the srping was pressedd much further when this happened it could've been much worse. I was able to get Rent-Way to give me a refund when I took it back to them and showed them the problem.

Just a refund??? They should pay for yours and your dad's medical/dental fees. But they probably made you sign a waiver or something.

Yeah I had to sign a waiver to rent it and we didn't feel it would be worth it to take it to court. We were amazed how close we got the alignment though just by eyeballing it, before taking it it for the actual alignment. Anyhow, I still have a very slight, but not noticeable divet on my forehead that you can feel, but not really see from the incident. LOL!

Do it yourself!
With proper tools and spring compresor (you can rent it) took me 2.5 hours, and I dont have strong mechanical skills.
