My Silver bulbs that blink amber for the 02 tails.

Just a simple mod that gets rid of the fried egg look.
I think it looks alot better.

It's silver, but when it is lit, it is amber, perfectly legal.
What do ya think?

Edub, where did u get those? I've been looking for those forever. I found those on another site but they were for Audi's. I want a set for my front turn signals and another one for when I am able to afford the 02 Tails.

Another item I'm looking for is the side mirrors w/ the turn signals in them.

I want it, too... but can't find it any where... Philips doesn't sell Silver bulbs in NA...

It would look good for front corners, too..

Just paint them with white or silver paint.

I painted them with a very thin coat of silver paint.. it only shows the color when lit..

Doesn't have to be heat-resistant or anything.. you are only going to have them on for a short time.. but for the fronts, I'm going to get one that can take more heat..

I didn't want to just get clear bulbs and I definately didn't want the blue ones..

Just use masking tape for the bottom part where it actually goes into the plug.. lightly spray an even coat, let dry for about 2 days.. and you're done.. I tried this on some cheapy bulbs first to see how long they would last with the paint.. so far, its been about 2 months w/o a problem..

I'm doing the fronts next week.. I'll put up pics of them as well..

The BMW guys use "silvervision" bulbs by Phillips. You can order them online from 2 different places but I can remember the sites. Try posting this topic on the Bimmer.org forum.

Hahahah......I did that to mine's long time ago. . Make sure you get heat resistant paint for the front, since they do get quite hot in the front.

Actually, I was consider re-doing them with chrome paint for the front ones.. give it a bit of shine as well as color..

I'm sure they make some kind of heat-resistant paint like this..

Thats exactly what I wanted to do to my front corner lights, but I wasnt sure it would work. I have been looking for silvervisions forever, but couldnt find any for my car. Its a pain gettin to the front lighst on the 2002's probably the same on the 99-01's, but since it looks like it works I'm gonna have to try with some high temp paint as soon as I get back home. Thanx Edub.

I got a bottle of high temp resistant paint(in silver) for engine bay(header/down-pipes), would that work?? If not, what's your recommendation??

They are Philips SilverVision

Doesn't look like they make the blade socket type for our cars!
Only the round kind!

You can wire it so that your front blinkers are only on when the blinker is, instead of being on at half power all the time.

Don't worry about that. Just go out and buy a new set. You can buy a set of 1157NA bulbs at KMart for about $2.00. That's what I did and I'll just let them dry for a while but still have the other set still in.

The signal bulbs are what I did the mod to.. there is a clear casing around them had hides the bulb pretty well.. but in sunlight and certian angles, you can see the amber bulb..

Just turn on your hazards and look at the tails, you'll know what bulbs we're talking about.

Andy-
I'm sure any kind of paint should work. I used basic silver body paint for the rear signals.. so the engine paint should be just fine for both front and back.

I was looking all over for the SilverVision bulbs as well.. but I counldn't find any place that would sell them in the US.. and they were expensive as hell too..

One thing about the bulbs, you must let them dry completely otherwise, the paint will bubble.. I ruined a set of bulbs already.. that's why I experimented with cheapy ones first.
And the paint should be just enough so that you don't see anymore orange.. the first time I did it, I used too much paint and it came out nasty..

High heat engine paint might not work so well. I tried it and it is too thick to put on a thin coat. I tried a few times to just put on a very light coat and each time it went on too thick.

I found a site that sells silverVision bulbs.. unfortunately, they only come in 1156 which should only be used for the rear signals..

but they would look nice.. I'm gonna order some soon and try them out..

I think you could use 1156 for the font, but they would only blink.. they would not turn on when you have your parking lights on..

as for the font.. I have not tried it yet.. I thought it might be a problem with different paint.. oh well..

is that true? that with an 1156 bulb, the parking lights don't come on, only when you use your blinkers? i heard that you have to put electronic tape on one of the metal tabs of an 1157.

Tim, if these work out, you should sell them. I'd buy them from you.

I'll be ordering the SilverVisions pretty soon..

I was looking at the bulbs themselves and it turns out that the prongs are exactly like the 02 bulb prongs, so they will fit the 02 harness perfectly without having to file off one of the ears..

I have a few questions...

Edub-TL - Are the ones you painted not working out well for you? You said you were gonna buy the silver visions so...?

Where can I get the heat-resistant paint from? What Brand? Never seen this stuff before so do I just say "I need heat resistant paint" or...?

Why do the front ones need the heat resistant paint? Is this just for TL's or would it be for my 92 legend too?

Should I buy the chrome paint or silver?

Thankyou!!

1156s won't work in place of 1157s. The guide prongs on a 1157 are 180 degrees apart and at different heights. The prongs on a 1156 are roughly 160 degrees apart at the same height. The main difference is in the contact location(s) on the bottom. You can see the differences in the pic below. The "clear" bulb below is an Osram Diadem. They're comparable to the SilverVisions. I purchased a set for the front turn signals on my CL-S before I knew the difference. They won't work (at least in the fronts). My understanding is that the SilverVisons and Diadems can't be sold in the US *yet* since they haven't been DOT approved (or something like that). I got my Diadems from a place in Canada...

Hey Edub and the others,

Any new developments on the bulb painting? I just tried painting my Polarg M12 bulbs with chrome paint, let it dry overnight, then tried them out this morning and the paint just flakes off. How sad.

I guess a high-temp paint is needed. Anyone do this successfully for the front turn signals? Those bulbs get pretty hot as the M12's are 35Watt bulbs.

Yes, you will need a high temp silver paint. I have done this on my rear signal bulbs and it is great. And one of my boys on this board did it for his front turn signals. No peeling of flakes at all, but the paint does dim the light output a little though. But at night, you will definitely see the orange light blinking.

Exclamation Caution!

bebber,

Just watch out when you do the fronts.. people have told me that their bulbs started smoking and stained the corners with the black smoke..

I checked my rear bulbs about 2 months ago and there wasn't any flaking.. but I'll check them out tonight to see again and give an update..

I don't plan on painting the front cuz I'm chicken to do that right now until I find some paint that won't smoke..

I have not bought the SiverVisions yet to try out.. for $22/pair + overseas shipping is a bit much for me right now.. There is a special for $38/ 2 pairs(4bulbs total) too..

high temp paint

Thanks for the warning Edub. I removed the smoking bulbs before any damage was done.

I gave it another try. I removed all the gunk off my bulbs with paint thinner, then I sprayed a very light amount of Home Depot Rust-Oleum High temp paint that's good for up to 1200 degrees F. A light bulb doesn't get nearly that hot, so this should hold up. The best color match is silver, they don't have chrome unfortunately. I'll let this dry for a couple of days.

Cross my fingers.

I checked my tails over the weekend when I installed my new backup bulb..

I've probably had them painted the longest.. since June 2001..
And no chips at all!

I highly recommend this cheap and easy mod for the rear signals..

btw, the SilverVision bulbs from Europe will NOT work in the fronts.. cuz they are only 1156 which look like this:

on the bottom: -( 0 )-
1157 are like this: -(00)-

bebber, me likes the front.. may have to try it afterall.. thanks for the info..

Cheers..
