The motor is locked up....

Well I was on the way home tonight and this god awful banging started, and then the motor died. I tried to crank it again and it did crank but there was more of the same sound.

Now the motor seems to be locked. It won't even turn over and I can't get the pulley's to spin at all. I took off the cover on the manifold and there are definitely some metal shavings in there.

Any idea what it might be? I'm thinking its not related to the timing belt... I had it replaced 20,000 miles ago.

check the oil level first, is it burned or gone?
pic of what you removed so far would help
Dont believe timing belts wont fail just because they are recent- were the tensioners all replaced at tbelt time?

IF it was the tbelt broken and you tried cranking it over more- that is bad, but the metal shavings sound like its much more serious than that
What is miles now?

Plenty of oil and it doesn't look to be burnt. No warning lights before it happened. I was just driving normally about 30 mph. Car has about 130,000 on it now.

HS man!
it should be easy to see where those chunks used to be part of a gear or cam~
something broke big time- but you knew that already

Highly likely that the timing belt has snapped, and the valves have crashed with the cylinder head. Nothing is bullet-proof. Timing belt does fail prematurely once in a while.

Knocking sounds, pieces of metal and a siezed engine sounds like a 'thrown rod' to me. Get it to a shop where the valve covers can be pulled and start from there. Metal chunks are never good in any mechanism with moving parts. Good luck

That would make sense....if this was a pushrod engine, not an overhead cam engine like this one.

Connecting Rod. All 4 stroke internal combustion engines have them. And thats what goes when people say threw a rod. Not the push rod for the valves.

Do you know under what circumstances will the connecting rod come apart ?

wouldn't that be great for bull, if something internal snapped a pin and the oil pump failed- and it was found to be defective materials-

instant warranty on all damag caused as result of that part failure---maybe a fresh new motor!!! since a dead oil pump would scorch everthing that moves.

Connecting rod didn't come to mind.

Would it help if I said "I done blowed up!" to borrow from David Hobbs; who is borrowing from past NASCAR greats.

Usually they dont. When they do its usually due to high pressure (boost) or a spun bearing that freezes, or like you said due to a timing belt breaking and things slamming into each other. The other thing is hydrolocking.

I've only ever seen 2 or 3 engines with broken rods. One was in college and friend's Oldsmobuick broke driving home. When I pulled the intake, the small end of the rod was sitting where the 7-8 lobes of the cam should have been. The other was a lawn mower I had while dragging a thatcher. Both failures were at wide open throttle at moderate to high RPM and high load.

The kinematics involved in over stressing a connecting rod is complex, and should never happen in normal circumstances. Random material defects not whithstanding.
