How much noise does an intake make?

I was thinking about getting an intake. I think it was AdamYankee who said that it made first gear a little better. I don't want a loud noise at all. My friend has a AEM CAI on his 99 civic and it humms when idle and I do not want that.

Thanks
ROsh

I heard the one 99DWP has, and it sounded good. Hardly any increase in noise until the VTEC kicks in. Then, it growls... not like that tin can sounding Civic sh!t, but more throaty. If you "don't want a loud noise at all", then I wouldn't get one. If you don't mind a a throatier sound at WOT, then go for it. BUT, a few people have said they actually feel a loss in power in the low end. Just things to think about...

I love the sound of my AEM CAI, especially when VTEC kicks in. But during idling, the noise is so low that you will hardly notice it. IMO, it's the best bang for the buck in terms of power increase.

my intake is awesome thankx to socal28. it makes the car sound like it's literally breathing. when idle, it has a slight air sucking sound and no big sound until after vtec. it sounds like a mustang gt when i want it to.

Intakes make more noise than stock, but the cabin is so well-insulated that it's tough to notice the extra sound until I go above 3k rpm. It doesn't get really noisy until I go over 4.5k rpm and hit the VTEC shifting point.

I have noticed that it's even noisier after the filter gets dirtier too. More air restriction I guess.

Thumbs up

Just installed my CAI last night! Trust me, it doesn't make any noise at all until you hit the VTEC stage. And you will definitely feel a difference of the increased acceleration. This is a must have!

I have to agree. No increase in noise except when you stand on it. Otherwise, no additional sound. If you opt for a short intake with the filter inside the engine compartment, then you will hear noises. Not that pleasant either I might add.

When I drive around with my driver window slightly open, I can hear the intake 99% of the time (which is exactly why I drive around with my window slightly open). This is a good thing - it sounds like an intake should - a "whooshing" type sound. I like to delude myself into thinking that I have some sort of forced induction.

Throttle response is better throughout the band, though I noticed alot more perk off the line (as opposed to the top-end like others have mentioned).

At first, I didn't really like the sound the CAI made when it hit vtec, but I have grown to love it. It's addictive!

Too bad I don't listen to my system anymore. I found a new type of sound to roll to.

Don't get a short ram if you're concerned about noise. It makes a whistling breathing sound at idle and roars like a beast when you punch it.
