Hello - Trying to decide on a different car - Any advice

I am either looking at an '02 Infiniti G20 or an '03 Acura Tl Type S.

Does anyone here have any information or advice about either of these cars? I think they are both very good cars and the Infiniti is less expensive.

So thanks for any input.

the infinity looks like a decent ride but the tl just looks so much better!! plus you can throw all kinds of aftermarket shi.. on the tl.

a couple of things to keep in mind, first, the tl is one of the most reliable used cars available, according to consumer reports. just make suure to get an extended warranty that will cover the tranny.

Second, there is just so much information to be gleaned from acurazine that it really should count for something! If you have a question on yor tl, chances are someone here on azine has tried it, or experienced it and has an answer for you!

I have been on many forums before and acrazine is by far the best!! trust me if you get the tl you will be spending countless hours here on acurazine!!!! lol

good luck on whatever yo choose to buy.

This is pretty funny I had a guy checking out my car because his g20 was totaled. sfont hit the nail on the head, TLs are incredibly reliable besides the tranny recall on the 02-03's. I work for an Acura dealership and I see early 90s model cars coming in for service with mileage pushing the 200-300,000 range. Thats a true testament to any Honda/Acura car if it is properly taken care of. I know Infiniti/Nissan is just as reliable but comparably a g20 is more or less Infiniti's entry level sedan and TL is Acura's next step up the ladder. If you want luxury with a damn good feeling when your on the freeway I'd pick the TL-s over the G20 anyday. This is coming from a former Nissan/Infiniti enthusiast.

Thanks for the advice. I have heard of the transmission recall and that is actually my only doubts about the TL. Does that go for '02-'03 models only? Anything under '02 is good?

I actually found an '03 TL type S, for $10,000 CND. It doesn't say the mileage in the ad but I doubt it would have more than 150,000 km's as it's an '03.

I have seen many pictures of the TL's interior and it looks amazing, the Type S especially, with the trim.

Anyway, I have to sell my car first but hopefully that comes soon. Also, what are my chances of getting a decent '99-'03 TL, preferably Type S, for under $10,000?

If my chances of that are slim, do you guys think I should look into an older Acura, like a Legend perhaps?

Thanks again everyone!

i think now that the new 4th gen tl's are out, you should be able to find an 03 for around 10k.

the tranny issues are for 00-02's and i believe some 03's are included as well.

keep in mind not every tl owner has issues with their tranny, my car is a 2000 and "knock on wood", still is driving nicely.

So the '99 TL's aren't affected. I should be able to find a '99 for under $10k for sure and I would have the satisfaction of knowing it's not affected with the transmission issue, if that is correct?

Also keep in mind that if you happen to be in Canada and shop around enough, you could get yourself an 03 TL-S A-Spec edition:

http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/rp/03aspec.htm

I suggest just checking autotrader and it'll give you a good idea of what prices you should expect. That's actually how I managed to find my current 02 TL, and it gave me a perfect idea of what price I should expect.

the infiniti g20 is heartless. my buddy has one and i could not wait to get back into my TL. for instance
the g20 is louder than the tl during operation due to its engine
the g20 interior feels/looks cheaper and doesnt seem like it will stand the test of time
the g20 does not have many features unless you get the touring edition and even then you will still have everything the TL provides.
the g20's gas milage isnt as good as you would think due to its weight.

I got my '02 TL (it was pushing around 110k miles at the time) for about $9k (this was 2 months ago). My trade-in knocked off another $2k.

I'm a former Chevy owner and after seeing how good the TL still drives after 110k miles really instilled me to never to return to domestic. Heck, my trade-in didn't even break 130k miles & it was bad condition. For that reason, I couldn't even dream of buying a car (of which I was prepared to spend more than $5k on) if it had more than 100k miles on it. The TL changed that for me!

I was part of the trans recall so I was able to get a new trans completely covered by the warranty because I was exhibiting some symptoms of an almost failing trans. That was also good because the recall was for 7 years 9 months (which would be sometime early next year) or 114, 500 miles (which I was rapidly approaching).

The only thing I wish was that I could've gotten a TL-S but because they're coupes, I'm forbidden from buying them. I hate 2-door cars with a passion. But the TL has made me extremely happy.

No thats not correct. Even the 99s had some issues. Not as prevalent but they had them

The recall has nothing to do with the trans warranty extension,

And the TL-S IS NOT a coupe. The CL is the coupe

lol. Damn Craigslist. All this time I thought a TL-S was a coupe because of this one ad I saw that said it was a TL-S but it was 2 doors & I had it set in my mind that a TL-S was not what I wanted.

Warranty/recall/whatever it was...all I know is my transmission was going bad which is really all that mattered (to me).

So if I don't happen to find a TL for under $10k, should I consider a Legend perhaps. They look pretty nice, but they are old. Has anyone here owned a Legend? If so, what do you think of it?

I doubt it'd be THAT hard to find a TL for under 10k... depending on what you're willing to settle for. The TL-P I bought a few months ago had 206,000km on it and I got it for $7,500. It's in excellent condition and runs like a champ.

Search around. You will be able to find one. Legends have a head gasket problem

Lol, I hear ya. Nothing like misinformation - guess I should start browsing the photo gallery section (but that was #8 on my survey response).

The G20 is painfully slow...

It would be more fair to compare the G20 to a loaded Civic sedan.

I got my 99 TL about a year ago with 62k for 9,500 and its been nothing but a dream it shouldn't be too difficult to find one under 10k I was looking at G20s before the tl too but nothing about them really set me off... then I test drove my tl and I was hooked!

Id say TL all the way but good luck with whatever you choose!

I think you should do some hard research if your thinking the tl is a coupe. May want to do a couple google searches and gain some knowledge so you know exactly what each model gives you and what you want.

An Infiniti G20 is a glorified Nissan Sentra. It's not in the same league as the TL. Go for the TL, you will not regret it.
