Fuel leaking from top of tank

I seem to have fuel leaking from the top of the tank and dripping down the front side of it.
It is pretty much when the tank is full, so I've deduced there is a gasket failure.

I found this awesome thread for replacement of a fuel pump, but i'm not sold on replacing the OEM pump that is working fine.
I am having trouble identifying where there are gaskets or seals that might need to be purchased.
https://acurazine.com/forums/second-...l-pump-638918/

Is it worth buying just a gasket or making a gasket?
Or am I really better off getting a new pump, that from what I can tell, comes with the gaskets I need.
I dont want to buy an aftermarket one, all i've read is medeocre reviews of aftermarket pumps.

Thank you!

Hi, You do not need to replace the fuel pump. You will need to pull it out as the gasket (number 12) is a thick rubber gasket that goes around the fuel filter so the fuel filter needs to slip through the center, This is not a gasket you can make. You can reuse your fuel pump. I would recommend replacing the fuel filter while you have it out. You can get one from rock auto (Beck Arnley) (Number1). You will need to take the old fuel filter/fuel pump assembly apart and put the fuel pump in the new assembly. Inspect the small piece of fuel hose to see if it needs to be replaced. If it does make sure you get a submergible rated fuel hose. Inspect the fuel pump filter and replace if needed (Number 6)

from an Acura parts site

For the gasket you need part number 12: Gasket, Base 17574-S84-A01
For the fuel filter you need part number 1: Filter Set, Fuel 16010-S84-A01
Rockauto.com part was Beck Arnley PN 0433015 (043-3015)
Fuel Pump Filter part number 6:
Filter Set, Fuel Pump 17516-S84-A01
I had some pictures of the filters and gasket in the following thread: https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-tl-p...-ideas-991328/
Hope this helps.
Jon

+1 on being proactive and replacing the filter. If you do decide to replace and are buying the gasket from oemacuraparts, I would recommend to grab parts 29 & 30 in the diagram above in the unfortunate event that they don't seal properly when reused.

whitetiger5, Good call. Hope you are doing well. How is your AV6 doing? I may have to do it or something. Waiting for the dual solenoid to try but I think the tranny is gone.

29 is Retainer (Yellow) (Tokai) 17711-S84-003
30 is Retainer (White) (Sanoh) 17711-S84-004

They are cheap enough and you don't want to be held up if you need them.

I wouldn't bet the farm on it being a gasket failure. Why? 6G Accords and 2G TLs have a virtually identical fuel tank, and at least for the 6G Accords, the top of the tank rusting out and causing fuel leakage is a very common occurrence. Long story short, my money is on you needed a new fuel tank.

Agreed, I used to live in El Cajon, albeit 47 years ago. My thoughts were more aligned with the "Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin" location of @jstahnke10.

I saw that after you mentioned rust. Funny I used to live in Rochester, NH about 40 years ago.

My AV6 is doing great, coming up on 30K miles and 4years

Got my fingers crossed it's just a gasket and not the tank.

Actually if it was the fuel tank that has a leak he should be getting a evap error code I think it would set off a P1457 from the pressure sensor at the top of the fuel tank. Just a guess.

whitetiger, do you remember how high you had to lift the front end? I have a sloping driveway and am a bit concerned if I have to lift it too high. If i need to do this I will probably contact you for some advice.

My Accord with a rusted through spot in the top of the fuel tank never got the P1457 code; that said, every time I filled the tank the car would leave a puddle of fuel on the ground under the rear of the car.

Interesting. I was speculating as there is a pressure switch at the top of the tank for the environmental stuff with the tank rusted out it I would have thought it would set a code. I have seen the wrong gas cap set off a code. I would not look forward to replacing a fuel tank, it appears to be a royal pain...

Seriously, you literally need to drop the entire rear suspension to get to the fuel tank; not an easy job.

Horseshoez, More power to you for tackling a tough job.

I hope we hear back from jstahnke10 would like to know the outcome, don't think I would feel comfortable driving around with an open gas can behind me.

I am going to puchase the gaskets and both filters sets.
Good idea on the retianers, I think I will get them as well for good measure.

I wont have time to do the job for a few days or perhaps a week. I will follow up on the outcome.

I haven't had any evap codes at all, so hopefully I dont have a rust/crack issue with the tank.
I haven't been in any accidents either, but I habitually top off the tank.

Thank you so much!
Links and part numbers were expecially helpful!

jstahnke10,

Good luck and let us know what you find. I would recommend before you order parts, pulling the carpeting back and look at the top of the fuel filter and see what is there. If by topping of the tank you frequently fill past the pump click you might want to reconsider this as besides expansion the gas can get sucked up into the evap canister ($140) and the canister filter ($40). There are threads here that you can search on the topic. One last thing, check the part numbers for fitment on your model year. Best of luck to you.

I can't recall exactly how high I had to lift the front end up, I have a photo of the trans on a furniture dolly and it was close to 24 inches high, I think it was about 2-3 inches taller on my transmission jack. That's the height you need to get the under the frame rail on the drivers side. also, check out this post in the AV6 thread for another image of how high others had to get it.
