AV6 Install Checklist

I'm taking TL in this week for the swap to my mechanic. They've been doing transmission swaps for 30 years. He said they'd never done this one before but they'd be willing to. Anyone have a checklist of things for a mechanic doing this the first time? Any info would be fantastic. Preferably a list as inclusive as possible of everything they'll need to watch out for and swap and anything I should pick up prior to having them do it. Thanks guys!

Basically the AV6 is a direct "Bolt in" replacement for our old ailing 2nd Gen TL's.
There have been many threads detailing the general installation tips and the items which may require a bit of extra attention.

When both of the trannys are side by side, your well seasoned mechanic should have no problems with bolting up the replacement donor AV6 into your TL. Now's the time to consider updating solenoids, switches, filter and converter with the AV6.

How much did the AV6 cost ya and what does the mechanic want for labor ?

Tranny is $800 from an 06 Odyssey with 65K on it. Labor is $500 from a local shop. Pretty reasonable. I know I'll need to have him loop the power steering and swap the switches. I just don't know what switches exactly to have him swap. And I know he's supposed to swap the oil heating unit but I heard that the one on it can stay with no problem. These are the things I'm trying to figure out. I'm just trying to find an all inclusive list that I can give him and say this is what needs done. Anything needed with the TC?

Here's what I recall from doing my daughter's 00 tl. You can use either warmer, but I think the coolant hose nipples on the 07 accord pointed in different directions which would require new hoses or modification. You can use either filter, I left on the old one so as not to confuse the next owner when it's time to replace it. You leave the switches and solenoids on the newer trans, but replace the short wiring harness from the switches to the main harness. The shift selector switch from the old trans is re-used. If they carefully look at the witness marks from the retaining bolts and set the switch accordingly, it might not require any adjustment. Mine came with the torque converter, which I would prefer over an aftermarket reman. Sounds like a great price on the trans and labor.

I'm not too worried about another owner haha I'm at 270K right now and plan to drive for about another 100K or so before she's finally done. The shop I'm getting it from has it advertised as having a broken sensor so I'm thinking we'll be able to just reuse one from the TL tranny if I'm not mistaken. Don't know how the shop will see it but I have the funds to pick up a new sensor if needed with how cheap this install is turning out to be. They had said it comes with TC as well so that's a plus. So you replace the short wiring harness with the existing one from the TL trans? Thanks

Alright everything is lined up. Got an AV6 from an 07 Accord with 90K on it. $800 out the door. Shop agreed to do the rear main seal with the install for no extra and they're doing $500 labor. All I gotta do is take the seal and 8 quarts fluid. Do I need to buy a rear main seal for an 07 Accord or for an 03 TL? Just realized I probably should know that.

Buy a full case of Honda DW1 fluid. Ask for a discount ! Usually, they will match online pricing.

I used to work for autozone and we had a discount so I still get the discount when I go there. It's pretty nice. Hoping to get a good price.

Don't think that Autozone will have the "OEM" recommended DW1 tranny fluid. Maybe an equivalent off brand, But not the real stuff.
It's normally available "only" at an authorized Honda or Acura dealership.

Do NOT use another aftermarket ATF. It's just not worth it, especially if you're getting a new trans anyway.

I meant that Honda would give me a discount because I worked at Autozone. So buying at Honda I get a discount because they think I still work at Autozone.

Thought you guys might get a kick out of this. Car went in Saturday and they finally pulled the tranny last night. He calls me today asking if I minded not having power steering haha. He thought that looping the fluid to the rack would get rid of power steering. I told him to check the motor and he'd see there's a pump there and the secondary was on the tranny and not really needed. Pretty funny I thought.
