Acura EL?

Today on my way to school I passed a little acura on the road, I thought someone had put an Acura symbol on a Toyota corrola at first, im not sure if it was EL or AL or something like that, but it was very cheap looking and I was just wondering if anyone knows what it was. It had no plates and I saw it on NYS truway in albany ny this am.

It's a Canadian made luxury car based on the Civic. 1.7EL

Only available in the Canadian market for some reason.

It's priced above the Civic somewhere around the price of a nicely equipped 4 cylinder Accord I think.

the price is same to the civic EX coupe and still 2000 less than an accord LX

Personally, I think it's ugly. I liked the previous version much more. There is too much similarities to the Civic.

If they want the Acura brand to be more upscale then they really need to make the same model lines look different.

I always get one of these for a loaner when my TL is in for service. I think they are quite nice and if I wanted a car in that class, I would buy one. They have leather interior and are just like the Civic, which I also like. Strangely, the one I had with the sunroof had more headroom than my TL. Also, the price is right.

the civic platform is a taller car so the added headroom makes sense.

The EL is a really nice Civic. Seen a couple in th Bay Area w/ Cali plates so i guess its ok to bring down here.

I think of the EL as the same trick that Cadillac tried with the Cimarron (albeit with better build quality). Acura likely assumes American consumers will think the same thing and therefore won't buy them.

Just my $0.02

Are you calling us Canadians stupid? The Cimarron cost 3x as much as the Cavalier and is a POS. The EL is not a POS and is priced abot $3000 CDN over the Civic, and the cost difference is worth the extra features. Americans do not historically like economy cars, and like larger cars. That said, I amsure the EL would sell well in the states. BTW, what do you think an Accord/TL have in common or the Camry / ES300 have in common, GMC/Chevrolet trucks, Chev, Olds, Buick, Cadillac, Pontiac. Oh yes, they all have the same cars, scaled from economy to high end.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, I'm not trying to upset anyone. I DID say that the EL probably has pretty good build quality, it's an Acura, after all. I just have a tough time viewing a Civic as a luxury car because it's a bit small. This is a common conception among most Americans that I know, who prefer larger cars. Canadians probably feel differently about this (and are probably smarter about it, too).

Canadian Acura buyers have a different taste or buying pattern than US Acura buyers. The EL was created to replace the 3rd generation (4-round-headlight) 4-door Integra. The reason was that the 2-doors were selling well, but 4-doors weren't. In fact, the EL is so successful that the updated model is now still selling in Canadian dealerships even though there is no 4-door RSX available.
