2000 mile update. Every thing is running great. I do have a strange noise that i need to figure out. While accelrating i can hear a whine like a SC in the car. If i let off the gas or constant crusing it goes away. Im thinking the PS pump or something. I need to get a little time to check deeper into it when i get a chance.

Over all it was well worth it. Car is faster, Handles better (due to the differential and no doubt a few hundred less lbs between teh auto and manual) Im getting better over all combined mileage too due to shifting on my own and being able to skip gears

THat's great to hear that all is going well for hte most part. Much better than buying another faulty tranny when you're not covered by warranty.

fsttyms1,

I just think that converting a 2nd gen TL to a manual transmission is an awesome accomplishment!

As you look back over the entire conversion job, would you do anything differently?

If you didn't already have the airbag problems, do you think you could have made those work?

Bob

Wouldnt change much. I had fun doing it and it really wasnt that hard.

As for the air bags, If i wanted to i could repin some of the harness ends that are different (most likely due to 2 stage air bags and stuff over my single stage) If i ever get a bug up my but to buy a new OPDS i may get them to work, but thats not real high on my list of things to do now.

Yeah, last year when I looked into doing the swap I was told there are some parts on the J32A2 auto that needs to be swapped with some J32A2 manual parts. I don't remember exactly which ones. It would be nice to have a complete list so I can just got shopping .

Yes. It may be cheaper if you can locate one, but its not needed. there are some sensor differences (And one of them is a 500 dollar sensor) but depending on how much you can find a engine for???

There's like two parts lists on . One of which is the transmission being bolted up to the J30 motor.

Well a little update. Its been 3000 miles, Its still running good. (although i still have a whine thats best described as a supercharger whine like on the mustangs) I drained the tranny fluid (piece of mind) to check it and it looked just like the new stuff i poured in. Changing the oil now too, From here on out im running 15k intervals

This thing is sooo much fun now. It handles better (due to the lighter weight up front and the dif) and its fast too. Now i know what the type s guys had all these yers, but i get to row my own gears!

Well i got bored at my cottage, mixed my self a drink and poped my hood. My goal was to figure out the whine i had. I figured it out. It turned out to be the PS belt. It had sliped over on the outer edge of the PS Pully and was super tight. I got it back in place and loosend the tension on it and the whine went away (i need to replace the belt as its worn where it was riding on the lip of the pulley) but atleast i figured out what it was. All systems NORMAL

That's good to hear. I have a question for you about your install of the 6spd. I was reading on the tl 3rd gen board about the clutch dampner and investigated that device to see if it's on the CL 6spd. Indeed, it is on our car. Did you put the dampner on with your conversion? I'm going to remove mine this week to see if the pressure plate engagement will be any better during spirited shifting, I'm thinking it will. What's your take on this? Cheers!

Your probably better off without it, imo. it acts or is a checkvalve that slows the fluid return to the resevoir thus slowing the action of the pressure plate when you release the clutch pedal. My thinking is I'm better off without it because the pressure plate will snap into the clamping position quicker reducing the potential for slippage when slamming gears. I'll report later on it.
