DIY RL Speaker Replacement?

Couldn't find one while searching, maybe I'm using the wrong keywords.

Has anyone worked on replacing the factory sound system on the RL with an after market system?

I'm debating swapping out the components and sub. I was wondering if anyone knew the wattage output of the stock amps for the doors and the 8in sub in the trunk?

What's prompting this is a blown 6.5 and maybe trying to get some extra bass from the back. If I can do a clean swap on the speakers without having to touch any wiring that would be the best. I doubt the wife will want me to spend the extra money on amps, caps, wiring, etc.

Supposedly the speakers are 2 ohms each, but I have not seen any conformation on this, just mentions of it. If you do a speaker swap and the stocks really are 2 ohms, your best advice would be to replace all with 2 ohm speakers, but they may be hard to find. If you replace them with 4 ohm speakers, they will play quieter, but by replacing all of them, you can probably just turn up the volume (I'm not sure how high it goes) to solve this problem. Just a heads up, and something to consider. I know most smaller speakers are 8 ohms which will play even quieter. If you can overcome this, a straight swap theoretically will work. Good luck!

Thanks for the insight but my post said I already did a search (and found the first two for speaker replacement since that is my main concern) and within these answers I still did not find the answer to my question on the output wattage of the stock amp in the headunit for the components.

And if a direct speaker swap (same ohm speakers or easier driving speakers) will be possible.

That's what I was thinking. I'm just not very familiar with the nuances of car audio and if a 4 ohm speaker will be damaged by driving it with a 2 ohm amp?

No. You will not damage a speaker because of it's load (ohmage or resistance). You will, however, damage an amp by putting too heavy of a load on it. Heavy means less resistance for stereo applications. If this is indeed a 2 ohm capable amp, you will not damage it with any speakers you can find, unless you hook them up in parallel (bridged), b/c you probably won't find anything below two ohms. Like I mentioned before, you might be hard pressed to find any 2 ohm speakers that aren't 12" massive sub woofers. Really, most car speakers are 8 ohms, but 4 ohms can be found.

As a note of something I missed earlier, your amp is not in your head unit. The RL has a stand alone amp in the trunk behind the right liner. There is a picture I posted in LSM Legend's DIY Aftermarket sub and amp video thread. If you can find this part number, you may be able to find an output wattage. Not sure if calling Bose tech support with a part number would work or not.

I was wondering what you found out on this. I have been trying to find this info out as well but cannot find it. I am thinking of replacing the sub with something better and was hoping to just use the stock amp. I don't feel like drilling holes in the firewall and running power for a new amp. What I am certain of is the stock amp and all speakers are 2 ohm.

thanks

If you are asking if pushing a 4 ohm speaker with a 2 ohm rated amp will damage the amp or speaker, no it will not. If you want to learn more about why, read my explanation here:

Well, thank you for the info but thats not what I was asking nor was the first guy. What kind of wattage is the stock amp putting out?? I read on here somewhere that someone thought the sub was getting 40 watts which I don't think would be enough to push an after market sub. So if that is true I would then need to install an amp as well and not just replace the sub to get better bass.

I just recently got the car and not happy with the stereo. I understand why it sounds the way it does but I just like more thump in the bass.

To be honest I have been digging a lot more and it might be the Auto Pilot screwing with the music. Music is mixed a certain way on purpose by the artist so I don't want Bose trying to change it so that all notes sound the same. I will have mess with this when I get out of work.

Darn it... HAHA... I guess you cannot edit. I meant AudioPilot of course.

From what you quoted, that's what I thought you were asking about. I don't know what the stock amp wattage is. I doubt it is 40 watts though for the sub. I would believe that for the speakers but not the sub. Good luck on your search. I can tell you that simply replacing the stock sub will most likely not improve any thump. It is obvious to me that the sub is under powered. I think the only way to improve this would be to supply more power with an aftermarket amp.

You are right, sorry. I did miss quote. Yeah thats what I have gathered. It appears to me that speakers are not bad it is the DSP and the way the stereo has been tuned I don't like. Replacing the speakers and using the factory amp would still be using the same DSP. I have tried changing the bass and subwoofer through the stereo but something seems to be trying to correct it. I will turn off the AudioPilot and see if that helps. I originally thought that was the same thing as the ANC but have learned otherwise.

After watching this and learning AudioPilot tries to keep louder notes from killing other notes; it might be the problem:

Thanks for the help.
