Question Chrome Trunk Trim for Backup Camera?

As can be seen below, psheu has an interesting solution for a backup camera for my 2006 RL that does not require a relocation of the trunk release.

I am trying to find out what product he was talking about and if there is more than one product that would allow that. I picked up the info below from a somewhat old thread and did not (yet) get an answer in that thread. (I thought a separate thread on the chrome trim camera would be appropriate)

Would anyone have more info about that solution or a similar one?

Thanks.

I think the dealers pull this part out of the catalog. Try to call parts department at the dealership and ask them for this part. if you have celestial silver, the closest color should be platinum frost in the 07. call the dealer and ask for this part. 07 RL "tech" chrome trunk trim above the license plate.

If you are going with an after market camera, then yes. The Acura accessory should come with everything you need, except it may not fit the trim.

This thread may help. https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-rl-2005-2012-76/07-rear-camera-license-trim-844566/

Thanks for the reference. I am even more puzzled though. The accessory does not come with a camera as far as I can see or does it? If it does come with a camera, will it connect directly to my 2006 nav system? Are you saying that a third party camera might not fit the 07 trim?

I'm only here to help.

To clarify, there is a backup camera that was installed by the dealer as an accessory. That's what I was referencing and it should have everything you need to install the backup camera. There are also aftermarket cameras that will require a NavTool or TVandNav2Go unit to interface with the nav screen. Either one will surely work with the trim mentioned before.

BTW, isn't the horse supposed to be before the cart?

I didn't realize that an 07 camera had to be bought separately from the trim. So, to summarize, for an 06 RL, I would have to get the 07 trim (around $150) and the 07 camera (around $500) and that would plug into my existing 06 nav without the need for anything else, right?

I would go this route over an '07 camera. I don't know what the difference is, but this is made for your car.

Yes but isn't that the kit that requires the relocation of the trunk release button?

Yes, that is the "official" kit from Acura (camera and install accessories) for install of the backup camera on the 2006 RL. But as you said, that is also the one that requires relocation of the trunk release. I did this install on my own RL and I can confirm that it includes every last thing you need for the install, down to tie wraps.

I too looked at PSheu's install before doing mine, and I really liked that in his case, you wouldn't have to relocate the trunk release. But after considering that I would have to custom cut and fit the camera location myself and make sure it fits and secures properly, I decided to just stick with the original accessory. It's hard enough to do all the cutting and drilling and screwing with the original kit. It would have been much harder to make sure things are lined up properly with PSheu's method.

In either case, I think if you are going to attempt it, you should get the kit (both part numbers) and then also the 2007 Trim piece so that way you have everything you need to connect it up to make it work. You will have to custom attach the camera somehow... but everything else is included.

This.^

That kit is designed for the purpose of relocating the release, but I think it is your best option to make work with the '07 trim. I don't know how you would know all the parts to get from an '07 to make the camera work.

I think I like the 07 solution but I am worried about Megatron's comment. I guess I would have to rely on someone who's done the 07 thing....

Either way you have to drill something.

Agreed. The 07 solution seemed to be simpler though...

Mounting the actual camera to the trim would definitely be easier. However, plugging it in would be a pain in the ass because it wasn't designed for that. I would rather start with all the parts to make it work and then make it fit rather than the other way around.

I think the 07 solution looks and works better, but I don't know about simpler! If you're thinking it's simpler because you don't have to mess with the trunk release, that will be more than made up for by the complexity of trying to align and secure the camera to a custom location. If you're going to try though, I would definitely get everything you need with the 06 Kit before you start.

Is it really a custom location if the trim already has a hole for it?

Yes, because you still have to drill through the aluminum trunk lid somewhere to get the wire through. There may be a hole in the trim, but I don't believe the camera is solely mounted to the trim. It should be attached to a more solid location like the trunk lid.

the 07-tech license plate trim does not come with camera and it is relatively cheap. you just need to match the little bit of the screw plate to your car color. with this installation, u just need to cut one hole and be done with it vs. relocating the trunk opening latch. all i did is match up the opening and cut the hole big enough to fit the camera (on the trunk part about 1/2" X 3/4" square cut). both the 07 and 06 camera will connect directly to the back of the navigation unit. The camera unit is a bit different between them. let me know if you have any question. I've installed that camera ages ago and it is still going strong

I dug up some old msg I send to help a fellow A-Zine member:

gosh, you'll need to remind me of the 'white clip'. I forgot about that one...

as for the wiring, it is IMPARATIVE make sure you put them in right order (otherwise, you r gonna burn/shortout the camera unit)...

as for running the wires, use the wire-lead that came with the kit and run the wire through the pipe hinge of the trunk (after you assemble the wires and the connectors).... not an easy task.... but necessary!

after you run that through, it's a breeze, just connect the connector to the back of the navi dvd rom unit...

also, be careful when cutting the opening in the trunk lid (it's made of aluminum alloy, very easy to mess up)...

- remove the old license plate trim,
- tape up the general cutting area
- put the new one on so you know where the opening is, and use marker to marke the cutting spot.
- now cut with caution, u wanna cut smaller so u have room to cut it bigger if need to.... otherwise, if u cut it too big, there is no way to recover....
- i used the black tard-like urathan rubber to hold the camera in place (even now), u don't need all those screws and metal plates to hold it in place... benefit, natural water sealant, find the perfect angle, and after they bonded, it's like part of the trunk.....

good luck, keep me posted... and send me some pix

I am now getting ready to start this project and added up the parts:

- 08B21-SJA-200 (attachment) $132
- 08A21-6H2-360 (camera) $239
- 74890-SJA-J02ZJ (garnish) $152

Total: $523 (AcuraPartsWarehouse.com) before shipping, taxes and any other things they may through at me.

This is (still) far from being cheap but if I can do it myself, it is still less expensive than the 2006 solution from the dealership...

Unless there are now other solutions out there?

Question

I've done a bit of reading on the topic and it seems to me that the $300 Navtool + a $100 camera would be cheaper than the option above and likely as good.

Any thoughts on that?

Navtool is $200 on ebay and you can get a good camera for $50. We've all used the same one from china.
