05 RL left me stranded doesn’t start with key

First time posting so hopefully got all the details. Got my 05 RL 200k oil changed and they tried to reset my oil light and somehow got to a screen where it said my wireless key had an issue. But drove off fine. Shortly after went to drive car let me in but went to turn ignition and it would only let me go to first turn move the steering wheel then it moved back automatically and the dash didn’t fully sway welcome. So I popped off the ignition turn piece tried the actual key and the car just cranks with using the key and will never fire up. After jiggling everything I dropped my fob and boom it all works with my fob ! Anyhow this has stranded me 4 times now. If I throw my fob on the ground it will usually start back up … seriously ?!?! I’ve replaced batteries in the FOB so I know those are good. Please help we are stumped.

Locked out.

Yeah I only have one fob. It’s weird the actual key won’t start and it just cranks. Almost feels like the alarm doesn’t fully release or something. Only way I can start the car is with the fob. We’ve only had the car about four months but didn’t happen until they reset my oil light / couldn’t figure that out so we did it ourselves and

Assuming your 05 RL has this but my 04 and 08 TL had a green key light appear on the dashboard indication communication between the key fob and the engine immobilizer. There is a ton of info on this subject. Here is one thread - happy reading.

We will try to reprogram the fob. Any idea why it just cranks with the actual key and it will never start up ? Key works for the doors just fine. Also out of curiosity when I drive and park my car only the drivers door unlocks when car is off… on my other vehicles the passenger door unlocks when you park. Is this normal for rl ? Thanks again guys. Love this car so far just figuring out bugs.

I believe in the thread I pasted above another forum member had mentioned the same thing - the fob worked with the doors or only the driver's door and would not start the car. Not sure if there was a resolution to that but if the engine cranks and doesn't start, my guess is the immobilizer is in play. Have you looked on the dashboard for the immobilizer key indicator light??
I think I read in that thread that a forum member mentioned programming of the fob was a two step process - one for the doors and one for the immobilizer??
In terms of doors unlocking when you put the car in Park, there should be a setting for that driver's door vs. all doors.

This may help - https://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/...6/JA0606OM.pdf

I had a similar situation when I first got my 05. Somehow the steering lock was engaged but in these cars, it doesn’t act like the steering lock in any cars I ever owned, so I was stumped until I turned the wheel and the ignition at the same time for whatever reason. I wonder if that’s what happening to you? There are options you can change for the door locks in the head unit I think. Or the dash. I forgot where I changed it but now mine lock as soon as I put it in gear and all unlock in park.

When the car doesn’t respond with the fob and then it just cranks with the manual key the steering wheell doesn’t appear locked up and I shake it. Keep trying to have it duplicate when it locks up on me at home but it only does it when we go places. I’ve check every fuse the #7 fuse has been replaced by previous owner with a 7.5 the book calls for a 10. That’s the only thing I see so far. Also noticed my washer pump for the windshield doesn’t work doesn’t even make a sound so I think that motor is toast but wipers work find. Just finding little bugs here and there. Orig service records show navigatin unit broke a long time ago so the removed it and I believe the passenger door handle sensor. Weird bugs but this car is runs amazing and handle amazing.

This just sounds as simple as a loose connection inside your fob. If dropping it makes it work again, something is wrong in there.

When the fob connection is not working, that explains why you can only crank but not start - the immobiliser circuit needs a signal from the fob to start the car.

I still think this sounds exactly like steering lock. Unless you get a fob error message. When you bent down to grab the fob, you probably turned the wheel enough to unlock it.

Would all this make sense when the actual key the car will never still only cranks ? It did it again on me today I hit the unlock button twice on fob and it started with the fob. At all times it never starts w the real key just cranks. Thanks everyone trying to get this thing dialed in

dumb question: Have you put new batteries in the fob to see if they’re weak? Sorry if you already answered this.

New batteries in the fob. If the fob was completely dead I should still be able to start the ignition with the key … ? But the key never turns it over just franks like a dead battery but have full lights and power. But the car starts fine with fob until it locks up on me. Car runs handles great other than this.

It was the steering wheel lock

It did end up being the steering wheel lock when i pulled into a tight space the steering wheel would start to lock but not fully and if i forced the wheel to turn it’d start right up.

Glad you got it figured out. The wheel lock is pretty sensitive in these and takes some getting used to. I always had to put in some effort to lock the wheel inner cars, but not this one.
