RL and the Mac

I want one. Do you think it will be a simple plug and play with the RL's audio/phone controls?

I'm at MacWorld right now and I saw the Keynote this morning. When Steve explained the iPhone, I nearly wet my pants! I want one!!!!
Funny, just when Microsoft releases an MP3 player, Apple make the MP3 player obsolete. Honda could learn a thing or two from Apple.

Hey, I'm 54 and well past my half-life (just gradually alpha/beta decaying into old age).$599 for something fun and life enhancing is no deal breaker. The Starbucks demo is exactly what I've been telling my wife is needed. I'd like to download where things important to me are located (Barnes & Nobles, Starbucks, etc. and to also have a means to keep refresh the information as new stores/sites are created or old stores are taken down).

I admit, though, I can hardly wait for the first RL owner to pair one up with their car. (RL-specific statement to keep this thread from going to OT )
OTOH, I own a considerable amount of Apple stock--bought it at (split-adjusted) $7-8. The iPhone will sell like hotcakes in the U.S. and around the world as most of it is GSM. I can't wait till the next split. AAPL finished at $92 today.

Not to diss CDMA, but the only way I would get a CDMA phone is if I lived in a rural area. Most of the world uses GSM, which stands for Global Standard for Mobile. As a result, most of the cool new phones are usually developed for GSM first. CDMA is basically a US standard, one that hasn't quite caught on with the rest of the world.
The iPhone might only work on Cingular at first, but the glory of GSM phones is that they can be unlocked, so it is just a matter of time before you will be able to use iPhone with another GSM network (but not CDMA).
I only own a handful of Apple shares, unfortunately, but I bought them at $18. I'd buy more, but the current price is too rich for my blood! I'll just buy Honda stock instead!

Neuronbob and jhruva90, congrats on your investing success. 10 and 5 baggers don't come along very often and you have had the good sense to sit on your hands during ups and downs. Good stuff.
Now back to RLs, I was chatting with the Winston-Salem Acura service manager yesterday and he said the the folks buying 2005 - 2007 Acuras were heavily IT professionals or technically savvy folks. He said the 1996 - 2004 RL owners were predominately older folks and they are intimitated by the 2005 - 2007 RL and this is why the dealers asked for a non-tech RL for their older customers looking trade in their 1 gen RLs. Gee, maybe Acura should co-market with Apple. Makes sense to me judging by the number of RL owners with Macintoshes on this board.

That's a good point. I didn't consider that a de-contented RL would be needed for the older patrons who drive the previous RL. I remember attending an RL launch event at Radley Acura. Most of the people there were senior citizens, and like your service manager noted, most of them were senior citizens.

The sales staff at Tischer told me the same thing-- that the decontented (i.e. no Nav) RL for 2007 was so that Acura could reach the older audience that was afraid of (or felt that they did not need) the Nav system. I guess that I hope their effort works but can't imagine wanting the RL without it.

One side effect of the de-contented version is that now Acura can advertise the RL as starting at $45K instead of $50K. That will at least make it look the same price as the RL's competitors, if not cheaper.

b) I didn't even consider older people and the RL. Everyone I know with an RL is my age (late 30's), slightly older, or significantly younger.
c) Maybe Acura should market the RL by putting ads in MacWorld magazine. that'll really boost the number of Macheads on our board...

They really should market to the Mac crowd. They should co-brand with Apple, if possible.

I can see it now at jobsie's next keynote, "introducing the new iRL.... now with OSX...." all controls are touch screen, the dashboard is literally apple dashboard with different widgets for your instruments and using automator the car will gas itself up and get a car wash while your at work. and the windows are all video screens that are touch sensitive connected to a macbook that wirelessly connects to cingular for internet access. That's right everybody you heard about the new partnership here first!

The iPhone's touch screen would work really well in a car.

Anybody who knows anything about computers knows that a Mac performs better than a PC (in almost all cases).
I am a MacBookPro owner and a 24" iMac owner. I also own 2 Dell laptops with similar technology and they just don't compare to the Macs.
Have you ever browsed the web looking for a software crack without fear of viruses or spyware?? I have...because I own a Mac and am IMMUNE!!

We CAN pass virii to unsuspecting Windows users, though.

Benjamin Daines was browsing the web when he clicked on a series of links that promised pictures of an unreleased update to his computer's operating system.
Instead, a window opened on the screen and strange commands ran as if the machine was under the control of someone — or something — else.
Daines was the victim of a computer virus.
Such headaches are hardly unusual on PCs running Microsoft's Windows operating system. Daines, however, was using a Mac, which is often touted as being immune to such risks.

Well, another IT guy (Sr. Director of Development, 30 years in the field), current Mac owner (Dual G5) and multiplatform home (Mac + 7 PC's).
Guess the RL does appeal to tech guys who value good design ;-)
It is a very logical choice, with all its great handling, tons of automation and configuration and great value for dollar, it truly appeals to the tech crowd.
Now, here's a corollary question: How many audiophiles here?
I'm one for sure, here's what I posted in my audio club about the RL.
See details of my system on my site.

Heh. I suppose there's a pretty high correlation here too.
I used to be an audiophile -- like you, however, I have been afflicted with tinnitus (over 10 years) and my hearing overall has taken a plunge, it's a very mild loss (says the audiologist... it ain't HIS ears) but it's mostly in the high end.
I was, however, very proud of my *other* Mac a few years ago -- my McIntosh MC275 (an old one, it was my father's, I had it re-capped and tubed...mmm) driving Snell Type D's, fronted by an old Hafler preamp, and with a Beogram 1800 turntable and Sony CDP777ES CD (through a Cobalt d/a) as signal sources, with Tara Labs and Kimber cables.
Alas, when I bought a separate system for home theatre that cost under $3K that I wound up using 99% of the time just because it had a remote control, and realized that my Yamaha/Paradigm home theatre sounded 90% as good as the stupid-expensive stuff to my ringing ears.... I bit the bullet and got rid of the audiophile stuff.
I kept the turntable, though. Gotta have something to play those amazing old vinyls on....
EDIT: BTW, i <3 your Martin/Logans.

Yup. Another audiophile (not a snooty, rich one, though) here. Martin Logans are HOT.
I'm a Onix Rocket owner, though..... Talk about bang for the buck.....

What, you mean you DON'T have Mbingo wood hockey pucks sitting on top of your digital equipment's power cords to dampen their resonance? AND YOU CALL YOURSELF AN AUDIOPHILE!?!??

I suppose I treat my cars the same as my computers which means no Mac in my life as I prefer something faster than stock and we all know Macs are not fast. Supercharged or overclocked for me. 9 working computers in my home and all PC. Had a Mac last year, did not last long. Good computer, great OS, just not for me.

I am a recent Mac convert myself and I love it. However, I do still have my PC and use it on occassion for the software and games that Mac doesn't quite have yet.

I switched to the top of the line MacBook Pro last year and have been underwhelmed.
It's OK, looks nice, but I don't find there to be much difference than my XP systems at work. I switched because of friends' mantra, "they just work", but I've had just as many problems, and more freeze ups with my Mac as I ever had with my previous XP laptops. I like the Mac but question the value over alternatives. Which is the reason I bought the RL, great value for what you get.

Interesting. I'm a professional developer and use both Macs and PCs in my work. The Macs are much more reliable and trouble-free in my experience.
I wind up re-installing Windows from scratch a couple of times a year just to get rid of the cruft that accumulates on the system and in the registry; blue screens, even with Vista 64, are a frequent occurrence (perhaps once a week; they seem to be in the nVidia drivers most of the time); and the utilities I have to tack on to get Mac levels of usability (like multiple desktops) have their own foibles.
It's not as if Vista's not usable or anything, but if your Mac's really more problematic than your Windows box (freezes are extremely rare: can't recall the last time any of my Macs has done that, really), I'd wonder about hardware problems.

I have found that my XP systems are every bit as reliable as my last MacBook Pro which themselves are bullet proof crash free. Now Vista is a different story and in fact removed it from my latest Dell XPS laptop and installed XP Pro SP2. So I have reliability with a real video card-something MacBooks lack. I game and Apples are not gaming machines unless you want to tone down every setting to mimic a Commodore 64 (stretching a bit, I know).
I have always said, MacBooks are for Starbucks and students. But don't bring a knife to a gunfight and once I bust out my XPS at Starbucks, MacBook Pro owners start exiting the stage.
