Potential solution for AC problems in '05s/'06s

I was just adding the new Acura Service News link and found a pertinent item for 2005 and 2006 RL owners. Perhaps this is one solution for the problem when the AC goes out.

Got a vehicle in your shop because the A/C runs
poorly or doesn’t work at all? A bad field coil in the
A/C compressor clutch could be the culprit.
To determine if this is the case, connect the HDS, go
to the DATA LIST, and monitor the A/C switch and
A/C clutch relay signals. If the DATA LIST indicates
that the A/C switch and A/C clutch relay are on—and
the A/C compressor clutch isn’t working—refer to
step 4 on page 21-91 of the ’05–08 RL S/M and
measure the resistance of the field coil. (Online,
enter keyword COMPRESSOR CLUTCH and select
A/C Compressor Clutch Check from the list.) If the
resistance isn’t to spec, replace the field coil with
P/N 38924-RJA-A01.

Interesting, someone said the RL did not have a compressor clutch and that the RL compressor ran all the time. This seems to indicate, this is not true.

Perhaps the clutch is to engage the compressor when it gets turned-on initially (or if you turn it on while the engine is running)?

Ouch

I just got quoted $984 to replace this part. The dealer claims this part's failure is 'rare' - they've only seen this in one previous RL.

I have an '05 RL with about 62k miles with factory extended warranty.

The part is NOT covered by the extended warranty. Not happy

Talk nice to them, show them the bulletin and they may goodwill it, if not then go to the Acura area rep, again, be nice, then still one more step, call corporate.

Remember guys, all cars have faulty parts that go out after warranty, we do not like it but that is the way it is, no matter if the part went out early on some cars.

I know of many cases where Ford and Subaru did not cover UNDER warranty.

Do you have an AcuraCare warranty? If so I would raise holy hell as to it not being covered. The AcuraCare warranty is supposed to be an extension of the factory warranty.

Is there a way to verify this? I too thought that the AcuraCare is an extension of the factory warrenty, which pretty much covers everything other than wear and tear components....

Anyone have any idea how much this AcuraCare warranty would cost? I'm thinking of getting an 05 later this year ( managed to convince my wife inspite of the new kid we are thinking about ) and wanted an extended warranty. I wish there was a way to get the Acura certified warranty, but I can only imagine what that might cost.

after some digging, it's covered

Took a few phone calls to Acura Client Services and then with AcuraCare, but now it's covered.

I have half-learned two things:

1. The AcuraCare Extended Warranty information will only display at the dealer you purchased the vehicle at. Because I'm having work done at a different Acura dealer, I have to ensure they have my AcuraCare cntract number and details to look me up.

2. The system the dealer goes through to check for coverage is like health insurance: a part may be covered under warranty, but the labor may not be. Parts and labor requests are given 'work codes' and then submitted for 'approval' to AcuraCare's system.

Yesterday's run-around was partially caused by a database 'outage' that resulted in a YES from the parts database, but a faulty 'NO' from the labor database.

Personally? It's all crap. I bought an Acura warranty product to avoid all this hassle.

And the fact that Serramonte Acura (Colma, CA) can't tell if I have AcuraCare coverage from Glendale Acura where I bought the car? I don't believe it. Ford dealerships can do this with Ford's own extended warranty products.

Lastly -- I nearly said 'yes' when the Service Advisor called and said it was going to be $1300. I happened to think better of it and called AcuraCare to double-check.

How many other AcuraCare customers aren't getting the level of coverage they paid for?

Thanks everyone for the replies. Now to find a ski rack

Good news...I couldn't believe it wouldn't have been covered by AcuraCare. Had it been an aftermarket warranty, it wouldn't have surprised me.

Right after I bought my extended warranties from Tim, I gave the contract numbers to my dealer. He has them in the system now so it shouldn't be a problem going forward. I'd imagine Tim could have had them put in somehow had I thought to ask.

Happy to hear it worked out.

AcuraCare is not an extension of the factory warranty. It does not cover every item that your factory warranty covers. Are there alot of items it covers? Yes, but there are alot of items that are not covered (headlight bulbs, trim peices, seat covers, etc).

Also, the talk about having a dealership "goodwill" a repair.. if the vehicle has an extended service contract or the vehicle is certified and the repair is not covered, a goodwill CANNOT be issued. Warranty will deny the claim everytime. Just an FYI.

Not 100% true, I know of one Acura Dealer that the service manager had a budget from the owner to do goodwill for customer service to improve their overall image.

So if you have a radiator problem after your AC repair....

I was adding the latest Acura ServiceNews bulletin when I came across an interesting comment pertaining to our RLs:

Radiator Damage From Doing A/C System Repairs
Currently Applies To: ’05–06 RLs

We’ve noticed an increasing number of radiators being replaced shortly after doing A/C system repairs.
Inspection of these radiators tells us that they’re getting damaged during these repairs. To avoid damage,
make sure that you’re really careful when you’re working near the radiator. Any damage to the radiator that
comes from doing A/C system repairs is not covered under Acura warranty.
I don't recall reading about cases pertaining to it here but thought I'd pass it on.

I bought an Acuracare extended from that Acura dealer that sells them online (forgot name). When I went to my local dealer for some warranty repairs the computer showed the ext warranty, no problem. I did not have to do anything locally to alert them, tho I was expecting to have to show papers etc, like poster did). I have an 03 CLS at 57k miles.

good luck, I hate the stress of car repairs, esp $1000 ones, covered or not.

Took car in Tuesday with a/c blowing warm air.

Service took car to shop and in less than 1 hour was given a '09 TSX and was told
compressor was bad.

Got car back Wednesday and was told a/c fixed and radiator was replaced due to a seam leak spotted by Tech.

Radiator replaced
Clutch set replaced
Stator Set replaced

All seems OK at this point in time.

I'm new here so I might be missing something... I went to the link but when I click on September 2007, it says that I do not have authorization to access the page. What do I need to do? TIA I bought the 2005 RL back in 2006, now I'm experiencing the same AC problem which an independent auto shop confirmed. Need every help I can get when going back to my dealer! https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/ugh.gif

That is an issue with the honda site. You have to be logged in to hot-link successfully I believe.

Welcome to the site. If you want to use a smiley, type ":" then the smiley name, and then ":" again. Like so but without spaces,: ugh :.

Yes. I was referring to the Honda page when I said logged in. Those links have been like that since I joined which is really too bad considering I never joined that site.

Honda changed the way it linked to the TSBs. Here's how you access them:
