Just getting started with 05 RL

New to the RL scene. I had a 2000 TL for 4 years and recently got an 05 RL. What should be my first "recession friendly" mod?

Easy there cowboy! The OP ask for a "recession friendly" mod! I don't think he is ready to drop $3k plus on a sweetass bodykit.

I still have the sticker on the left rear door that states "Car and Driver" Top 10 of the Year. I'll part with it so you'll get an extra 50 whp.

How recession friendly a mod do you need?

Cheapie mods on your 2005 RL include tint, iPod connectivity, rear spoiler, intake (each under $300).

The most significant mod this car needs, though, is wheels....but that's not recession friendly.

Thanks everyone, so far so good. I'm in the market for about $2000 worth of mods between now and the end of the year. Wheels would pretty much eat that up entirely so I was looking to add to the experience elsewhere.

All good suggestions.

I am a conservative with mods. I would start with accessories like wheel / knob, mud flaps, trunk tray, tint, current NAVI DVD and maybe a spoiler.

But before spending money on mods, I think it is wise to be sure all the TSBs, the recall and appropriate maintenance has been performed on your RL. The 05RL is as solid as later years, but there were some electrical gremilins in early models. Also research the forum for A/C clutch issues, driveshaft whine, PS hose recall and brake squeal.

And if your RL is not under a warranty, I would spend money there before any additional mods. When you have that solid foundation beneath you....mod away!

I say, update the Nav, tint, and iPod/video connection...

I have an 05 as well and hope to tackle the iPod/vid deal soon.

@ TampaRL

I have a CPO RL I assumed I would be good in terms of maintenance and recalls. I haven't noticed any of those issues to this point. But you're right...I better check those things above all else! Don't want to put the cart before the horse.

I picked up a trunk tray at my dealer a couple of weeks ago. They don't fit in the 09s, so they were selling at cost. More of the 05-08' accessories are likely to get cheaper.

Difficult for anyone to answer unless you state what you are looking for. Otherwise you going to receive/and have opinions based on what others want from their RL.
Performance? Looks?

Thanks 470hpGS400. I really don't have a preference I was just looking for some general suggestions. I think I'm going to just add a spoiler, mud flaps, fog lights, and license plate LED's. Oh yeah, I'd like to update my Nav. Anyone have any idea where I get the install software?

Fall is coming up soon, so you may want to hold off on new Navi disc. Pretty soon 4.73A from last fall will be dropping in price (used/E*Bay) when new ones come out. If you buy one now from acura navi you will get a 10 month old release.

Or wait for the new one in a couple months and buy new, hoping that release has a special "pre-release offer" that knocks down the price to something more reasonable.

Check to see what version software your RL is running now. If you are running 4.1x you cannot step up to > 4.3X without either loading 4.3X FIRST or getting the 'Step Up' secondary disc to directly upgrade from 4.1X to 4.6X or greater.

As a previous poster stated, Fall is the typical new release time frame and hopefully the latest version will be backwards compatible to all previous versions and will not require intermediary versions to upgrade. We will see.

But if you have v4.1X there are several threads out here to search as to solutions how to upgrade to higher versions. If you already are running v4.3X or higher, you should be good to upgrade to all later versions without supplemental upgrades.

That's a good point. Based on researching this forum and others it'll probably be a good idea for me to hold off on updating the Navi until after the Fall release.

Another reason to wait for the new navi update is that 4.73 was offered at a discount ($125 vs $185) for a few months when it was first released. Perhaps it will be again.
