HID High Beam - Is it possible ?

Hi folks,

I am speculating to upgrade my halogen DLR/High Beam to HID. Is it possible ? If so what would you suggest ? What bulbs do I need to buy ? And where ? Does such an installation needs some hard modification to my head lamps ? I know HID are unable to run on low power so they will not work properly on DLR, but I am willing to sacrifice the DLR for HIDs. Has any of you accomplished this on an RL before ? Any specific information (or link) about such an upgrade would be appreciated. Many thanks in advance!

Regards,
Sasovics

I am doing the exact samem thing. Here's what I will be doing today.

I have an el cheapo HID kit off ebay for $60 shipped. Plain old regular installation into DRL/High beams.

Now at low voltage the lights flicker (already tested that), so what you basically do is drive around normally with low beams on.

When you hit High Beams, the lights will come on at full power, and that's what you wanted.

that's PIAA Super Plasma GT-X, mechanic wasn't working today so I didn't get the chance to drop in HIDs, photos next weekend. By then I'll probably replace stock low beams with 8k's as well. My fogs make them look sad.

"10k" HID High Beam:

Setup took about 20 mins by a professional, had to put 1 hole on each side for balasts.

Wow, looks beautiful! So you sacrificed the DLR for HIDs hi-beams. Would you mind post the details where did you buy these bulbs and for what price ? Also I notice the color temperature of your hi-beam HIDs is higher (more blueish) then your low-beam HIDs. I suppose this is beacuse of 10k vs 6k. Are you gonna change the low-beam HID bulbs to 10k as well ? Anyway, does higher color temp light bulb provide better luminance as well or just give more blueish effect ? Thanks

1. Yes, DLRs had to go as HIDs at lower power blink faintly
2. Bought the lights off ebay, a simple search for bulb size and words HID would get you results of bout $60 for the kit (buy from a US seller as shipping times may be weeks from overseas)
3. Low beams are in the range of 4k which makes them look yellowish compared to 10k
4. Yes, I just ordered a set of 8k bulbs for low beams and will install them on the weekend
5. The best luminance comes from the factory lights. Everything else, 6k and up specifically will lose out some brightness and will provide a little more color.

I'm not 100% what size your car has, but mine are H8 fogs, 9005 DRL/High Beam, D2S low beam.
