Question Extended Warranty

Just purchased a certified '05 RL with 31,000 miles. Acura certification includes a 7 year, 100,000 mile drive train warranty. I also receive a 1 year, 12,000 mile extension of the factory "bumper to bumper" warranty. The dealer also recommends an extension of the "bumper to bumper" warranty due to the electronics in the car. They wish to sell me an after market insurance policy to cover everything not covered by the drive train warranty. The cost is approx. $1000. Is this necessary. From what I have read the Honda electronics are dependable and it seems the $1000 could be better spent on other stuff. I would appreciate hearing other opinions. Thanks!

i would never pay 1k a year for a service contract on a car like this. That's not to say you won't posibly spend that much, but I would take my chances. $500 for 1 year 12k miles in your case, it might be worth it. The sad thing is that the 2005 is the least reliable year of the tech laden RL vehicle. The tech problems are expensive to fix.

I don't think it is $1k/yr but rather for the term of the coverage, usually 100k/7 yr.
I just purrchased an 06 with 25k and did go for the extended bumper to bumper coverage. Although the electronics may be reliable I have no way of knowing and there is always the malfunction outlier that could cost more than the coverage price to repair.
Just a gamble like any other.

$1k is worth it if it's Acuracare. As far as aftermarket...depends on the health of the company (check A.M. Best) and what is covered.

BTW, welcome to AZ!

I agree with NBob, but, I must tell you I bought an aftermarket warranty from WarrantyGold (AM Best rating) and they had to liquidate because their underwriter went belly up. This was in 2002/03. Still waiting for a settlement (probably 10%/$) - never got to use the contract. I personally will never get an aftermarket contract again.
