Clicking noise coming from the shifter

I'm thinking this is normal since the noise is consistent. But I was driving without my radio on today and noticed that everytime I come to a complete stop and when I press on the gas pedal to take off I hear a clicking sound coming from the shifter. It sounds like it's something being locked and released.

I then decided to try to see if the same noise would come on if I put the gear in D3 and nope, I didn't hear anything. It happens only in D.

Any of you guys have noticed this clicking noise?

Not to freak you out but my 02 TL Type S shifter clicked for about 3 weeks before the transmission went kaput. There were known AT issues for this year and they had extended the warranty to 7yr, 100K miles, mine went out at about 36K. The D light on the dash would also blink too. I didn't have any problems with my 05 RL AT though. I would probably have it checked out for sure.

DoctorTuna,

So does that mean your 05 RL also have the clicking noise as well?

No, just the TL. My 05 RL did not experience that problem. Your description though reminded me of the issue I had with the TL and thought I would pass it along.

Could be a faulty solenoid (or the switch that controls it) that releases the shifter when you step on the brake to take it out of park.

Alright, a little update.....

After three trips to the dealership and a new solenoid being replaced, the clicking is still there. The technician also drove two 2006 RLs they had on the lot and both cars had the same clicking noise. So at this time I'm just going to have to live with it.

I did find out that 2008 models do not have the same clicking noise because the design is different from the 05-07.

So anyone with 2006 RL wanna give this a try and get back to me that'd be great. The clicking noise can only be heard without the radio on.

Thanks!

I too have the exact noise you describe in my 2005 RL that I just purchased w/27000 mi. I've had it in for this issue once and they found a coin they thought might be making the noise, but the noise is still there. Haven't taken it back yet. Would be interesting to know if others have it. Like you say, you have to be listening for it.

Perhpas the 'click' is not electronic? Could it be the result of flexing from the console components?

Several of us reported a 'creak' from the shifter area and 'Not an Ashtray' earlier on in our ownership. Perhaps the creak was stifled to a mere tick now?

There are some pics in the forum showing where the creak appeared to originated. Perhaps it is the source of the tick you describe?

I had my creak exorcised by my tech 2 years ago, and they have not returned.

Hi TampaRL,

Can you give a little more info on this "creak?" (i.e. when does it occur, how often, etc.)

Also, do you have a link to the pics?

Thanks!
