C'mon, let's get one more!

After all this time, this is finally happening. I'll have to live vicariously through you guys as if I had my RL, I'd be 100% on board.

We want sound clips!

Looking at these gains, coupled with the gains the tl guys see with similar mods, I wish there were a dyno which had intake + precats + these pipes.. I'm pretty confident that we'll similar gains..

Exhausts generally don't void warranty. If a cat is removed in the process, the emissions warranty might be affected.

i listened to those sounds clips and honestly, don't think it sounds very good at all. it sounds raspy....and the second clip had this weird "cough" noise as the engine wound down back to idle... in all fairness, though, it could be the video / sound quality. I'll be totally honestg with you - those videos are poor quality.

if you want to recruit people to spend serious money on something like this - you ought to shoot quality video. you might have a great product, but you're not marketing it as well as you could!

the power gains are tempting - but on a car like an RL - for me..I woudl want the car to sounds similar to stock, and only somewhat louder... with no raspiness or backfiring, or little coughing noises as it winds down. an exhauswt is not as simple as just adding some straight pipes and tubing.

if it was THAT easy..c'mon.. Acura would just bolt on some straight piping.. they put all that crap on there for a reason..some of it to do with smog / emissions/ but also to tone down obnoixous sounds...

the RL is not a race car and some full blown loud exhaust would just look plain moronic on this car. you kjnow when you see a guy in his lame little Honda Fit and he has some huge mega loud exhaust...and even though he's got it floored, he's barely mnoving and you think "what a fucking tool" he's put this loud obnoxious exhaust on this sad little slow car.... well... taking a luxury car like the RL and putting some loud or obnoxous exhaust on it is equally as stupid. take a fine luxury car and put a fart can on it...

i'm not saying exhausts have no place on an RL.. I'm saying you need to be CAREFUL how you do it and what you put on your car.

Before I would buiy this, I'd want a better example of sound quality.

I would hope that you can take QUALITY movies.. HD with good quality sound..and post those up... splice together video clips from outisde at idle, cruising, and fly by.. then do some interior sound clips..so we could get a realistic idea as to what it would sound like.

any chance you can do that? I know there a lot of people would would buy this - more than 10.. if you coudl do that. you aren't going to sell thousands of them... but there is a market for an item like this but it woudl need to be something mild/tame. it needs to add power but retain a mature exhaust note.

borrow an HD camera if you ahve to...use an external mic... shoot some good video and get back to us!

I'm in agreement with the sound but that can be changed with doing the mellow Apex-i WS2 mufflers on this H-pipe and it will be buttery smooth. I bet you guys could also benefit from the Takeda SRI for the TL which gains 14hp/14tq. This intake plus this exhaust would yield you RL folks at near 35 additional whp putting you at the power of a small V8 with the effiency of a V6. Good luck to you guys. If this doesn't follow through at least there is a 2nd company doing R&D for your cars as well.

I am takin' over

So it looks like, there is a prototype, and a dyno, and a list of interested people....but no price and nowhere to order.

I'll figure out pricing and let you guys know what is up. I'll also try to meet up with our tester here and get a better video (since it was requested). I am not a big fan of videos for sound to be honest...but maybe we can do a bit better.

I wouldn't mind some extra torque in the RL, but not at the sacrifice of bad MPG.

Relatively speaking, of course. I understand when there is a performance mod, you'd tend to be more heavy footed. However, if the driving habits are the same pre and post mod, I'd like to think the gas mileage shouldn't suffer. But that's just me.

Mr. Heel Toe,

I am more interested in whether it will pass emissions testing with deletion of 3rd cat.

Any info on that?

Yes theoretically it wouldn't suffer it would benefit. But usually, real world, it ends up staying the same.

REMOVING A CATALYTIC CONVERTER OFF A CAR, EVEN TO PUT IN A NEW ONE ON, IS ILLEGAL. So no matter what happens at the tailpipe the answer is no, it should not pass if the tester sees a cat missing. However in many cases the testers are only really concerned about what comes out of the tailpipes and if the car passes there they call it good. SO the passing of emissions in most cases depends on how strict the pollution standards the local government has decided to keep. In CA, I would say NO you wouldn't pass. However many 3rd Gen TL owners across the country with a similar situation have noted deleting the 3rd cat and having no trouble passing emissions tests.

It isn't a specific answer. Everyone's answer will be different. YOU need to be concerned with the worst-case scenario, that the car will not pass. How difficult is it to switch back for the smog test....in this case, very simple.

Thanks, I guess I will have to take my chances...I hope they take tailpipe emissions, and do not go through ODBC and take it off the ECU.

Glad to see this is back on again. Sort of. I hope something comes of it this time. I traded my RL two years ago, and the process started well before I traded the RL.

Good enough for me! Are you only making a one-time batch or will you make a subsequent batch after the first 10?

This could be interesting especially coupled with an intake...assuming it won't result in any warning lights, etc.

While we don't have emissions testing here, there is a visual inspection every 2yrs and removal of a cat will fail you - but you can pass with a gutted cat so long as the housing is still there for the visual. Given all the other parts of the RL factory exhaust that visibly "could be" cats (and the rarity of the car here) I don't expect to have any issues.

Well in my county in nc we have emissions so im not doing cat deletes. You can do like others and go with hi-flow Cats. You'll get great gains but minus 5-6 compared to str8 pipes.

This is entirely dependent on demand. We thought we'd only work up 20 custom Tein damper kits for 1984 CRXs and we are over 60 units and counting now. So who knows???

You guys, no offense, are making this converter sound like a real deal killer. Honestly you only need to get inspections every couple years at most and swapping these parts out is not an exhaustive (pun intended) task. It is worst case an hour of time. And I would contend that the benefits of the cat removal actually in excess of 5 whp since the pipes connected to the cats is hugely restrictive.

In MA, we don't have visual inspection, just the comp hook up test for emissions. Do you think it'll pass the inspection this way?

I am working through a production run of 3rd gen TL quads, j-pipes, race pipes, and Base exhausts now, after that we'll get the RL back for fixture and production. March.

All times are GMT -5. The time now is 09:37 AM.
