'05 engine light on code P0430

Hello All,
This is my first post here. I bought a used '05 RL with 63,000 miles from a small dealer. I got the car inspected at Acura dealer before I bought it and the report came back ok. On the second day the yellow check engine light came on with message P0430 "Check Emission system".

I got a little worried and called up the guy I bought it from and he mentioned that he had been putting cheap gas in the car and drove it for a week or so and it is probably result of that. So I put premium gas from Mobil and added octane boster in the car and had the code reset from autozone. The engine light and P0430 light went off for couple of days and now it is back up again. I searched online for this code and seems like it could be something with the exhaust system or oxygen sensors.

Does anyone know what exactly could this be. Do I need to take it to a dealer. Can a local machanic other than Acura fix this. I don't want to spend a lot of money since I just bought it. I will try filling in the tank again and octane booster again to see if that will help.

Thanks.

You might also check the gas cap to be sure it's properly tightened, or for loose or broken sealing. That's the most common meaning for the "Check emissions system" Check Engine light. If it's not properly sealed, it will throw and CE light in a second!

BTW, welcome to AZ and in particular to the exclusive club of RL owners. You'll enjoy the car.

Thx for the reply.

I did check the gas cap last night and it seemed ok. But lets say it was not closed properly and I did it now. So will the Check Engine light turn off automatically after some driving or will I need to get it reset.

The light would go out automatically, but usually not right away.

If the gasoline cap looked OK, the next thing I would do is check for an exhaust leak. Beyond that, you are probably looking at the catalytic converter not functioning properly, or an O2 Sensor issue.

Thx.

Another question: How do I check for exhaust leak. I do remember that on the day I was driving it back home when I bought the car, the rear of the car was touched on the road just a little because i did not slow down for a bump on the road.

Just take it to a muffler shop. They'll probably check it out for no charge.

It takes up to three days for it to turn off. That's one of the quirks of Honda vehicles I've learned to accept over the years.

+1 on taking it to an exhaust shop for an initial eval.

My MDX kept getting the check engine light. I made sure it wasn't the gas cap and brought it to the dealer. Turned out it was the gas cap. Although it was screwing on tight and clicking in place, it wasn't making a good seal and had to be replaced. I believe it's considered part of the emissions system so may still be covered under warranty. Worth a shot.

A loose gas cap would show up on the MID. From the 06 OM:

If your fuel cap is loose or missing, a
‘‘TIGHTEN CAP’’ message appears
on the multi-information display after
you turn the ignition switch to the
ON (II) position, after you start the
engine or while you are driving. Turn
the ignition switch off and confirm
the fuel cap is installed. If it is,
loosen the cap, then retighten until it
clicks at least once.

The CHECK FUEL CAP message,
displayed after you turn the ignition
switch to the ON (II) position or
start the engine, should go off after
tightening the fuel cap, turning the
ignition switch off and on, then
driving over 12 mph (US) or 20
km/h (Canada) for at least 10
minutes. Due to different driving
conditions, itmay take a few drive
trips to make the message go off.

The CHECK FUEL CAP message
displayed while driving should go off
after tightening the fuel cap, turning
the ignition switch off and on, then
driving over 30 mph (US) or 48
km/h (Canada) for at least 45
seconds. Due to different driving
conditions, itmay take a few drive
trips to make the message go off.

If the system still detects a loose or
missing fuel cap, the malfunction
indicator lamp (MIL) comes on. If a
loose or missing fuel cap was not the
cause of the CHECK FUEL CAP
message coming on, the MIL will
also come on. When the MIL comes
on, the message goes off.

Turn the engine off, and check or
retighten the fuel cap until it clicks at
least once. The MIL goes out after
several days of normal driving once
the cap is tightened or replaced. If it
does not go out, have your dealer
inspect the vehicle. For more
information, see page 410.

I have to check mine. I had the CEL go off recently and the 0403 sounds familiar. If it's the sam, then it involves the EGR valve. In my case they replaced the valve and all six injectors.

I got my car checked from a local mechanic and he said that it is the oxygen sensors (bay 2). I am liking every thing in the car so far besides the Check engine light on (but I will get this fixed......hopefully not much)

Thanks all for the replies.

Couple of other quick questions. (maybe I should make this a new post)

1. If I keep the unlock button pressed on the keyfob all the four door windows and the moonroof open automatically. So, I thought if I keep the lock button pressed all the windows will automatically close. But this did not happen. Is it supposed to work like this? I tried using the actual key to lock the car and kept the key tilted towards the locking side and that closed the windows.

2. I just have one keyfob. I am able to lock/unlock door from the driver side with the touch sensors just fine. I also noticed that there are sensors on the passenger side front door. Is the touch lock/unlock supposed to work on passenger door as well. It is not working for me.

Thanks much.

1. No the fob will not close the windows by holding the "lock" button

2. yes, you should be able to also lock the doors by touching the dimple on the passenger side door.

you shouldn't be using octane boost. your use of a high detergent and quality brand premium gasoline is enough. octane boost actually does WORSE for your car, especially in your situation, assuming that you're not boosted. octane boost will RETARD combustion giving you worse gas mileage and performance - it's a common misunderstanding that we all discussed on the TL forums. just a heads up! welcome to azine and DAMN you picked one hell of a car
