Hi everyone, my 2017 rdx started making a never before heard noise when starting up the car. This new noise started happening a few months ago in 2024.
i have not been able to find a pattern or area of the engine that I could identify as the source.
the curious part is that sometimes in the morning the engines starts up quiet, like it has behaved in the past. I lice in LA and weather here has maybe been in the mid 50’s when i first started noticing this issue. Acura cerritos couldn’t help even with the videos nor did my new mechanic.
this can’t be normal and the experts haven’t provided any insight.

How many miles, and has the timing belt been changed ?

 

hey Poolman,
87,000 plus miles. Timing belt was replaced a couple years ago.

 

Probably a failing timing belt tensioner

Have noticed that in engines with weak timing systems, first indications of the problem begins with what you are describing when starting your car.

 

Bad tensioner sound..
