I feel like I drive like a grandma and I've seen my oil go from 100% (at 65k service) to 60% in less than 3 months. I'm going on a road trip, so I'll have the shop change it, but this drop/usage seems quick.

Thoughts?

 

this is not oil consumption, its a % that tells you how close you are to needing an oil change.

you need to check your oil dipstick when cold to measure oil consumption.

 

Except, I dont think you measure oil when cold.
run the engine to warm up the oil and let it sit for 10 minutes. then check oil.

remember, there's an oil pump that circulates oil. and if cold, oil hasnt circulated.

well, the main point is to be consistent. if you check oil at cold, always check when cold.
if checking after warm, always check after warm

 

the on board computer calculates OIL life % and when you should change, as the above user pointed out.

the onboard computer factors in; start-ups, rev's, engine on time, etc...lots of factors that calculate how fast the life expectancy declines...
if you're always speeding in the city, the oil life expecteceny will decline faster!

 

The MMI information is more of a factor of mileage than time but - as others have said - has nothing to do with oil consumption. Most drivers go between 6000 and 8000 miles before getting the 15% alert. How many miles have you driven since your 65k oil change? There is no need to change the oil before you get the alert at 15% - then you have about 500 miles to the 10% alert and another 500 to the 5% alert.

 

Right...I didn't mean oil consumption...but I wrote it. I meant % until next oil change as it relates to miles.

So, I have gone about 2700 miles and it shows 60%, which to me seems like I've travelled not so many miles to get to 60%. But given about 500 miles every %, then it seems that I'm not doing too badly. Probably could be doing better, but at least it's not 80% at 2500 miles.

I just had a pre-road trip inspection (probably overkill, but it's what I do...), and all checked out nicely (How could it not? it's an Acura!). The only thing I want to do now is get brighter bulbs, then I'm set.

 

I've found that it is pretty linear to 20%. So, if you did 40% in 2700 miles then you'll have covered 5400 miles at 20%. Add 500 or so for the 5% to 15% and you're roughly at the 6000 mark - about right.

 

You are measuring the amount of oil in your sump, so you want all of the oil drained down into the sump to accurately measure your oil level. You should wait a good while after shutting off the engine to ensure the oil has drained into the pan or the dipstick could be reading artificially low (don't want to overfill). You might be thinking about tranny fluid. You definitely want to measure the transmission fluid level when warm.
