Strange Metal Ting Noise? Please Help!

My 02 CLs has been making this ting ting ting noise for the past few months. It sounds similar to some cars after you've been driving them for a while then park and turn the car off. Sounds like it could be coming from under the car, maybe from somewhere in the exhaust. The noise is only there when the car is moving and as I speed up faster and faster it gets louder and louder. Lately it has gotten worse and my car has been getting worse and worse gas mileage. Anybody have an idea what this may be??

Does the noise vary with speed? Is it an intermittent noise or is it always there?

I'm dealing with a noise like a rock hitting the underside of the car intermittently. The location of the noise seems to vary (near the rear right side or middle, but never in the front of the vehicle). The number of times it occurs varies--sometimes not occurring at all. It seems most likely to happen as I accelerate from a stop. It's usually just a single noise, but sometimes it does it multiple times then stops. I've looked under the car multiple times expecting to see something hanging loose but don't see anything that could be causing the noise.

What octane gas do y'all use? Have you looked at your spark plugs recently? I wonder if your car is misfiring, Speedy.....

Quinn, have you looked under the car while a friend throttles it (in P/N of course)? Maybe a heat shield or loose exhaust mount/flange is to blame... While you're down there, look at your suspension, particularly your dampers...if the rubber spacers are malformed, worn or gone, that kind of noise can happen.....

I hope this helps!!!

Thanks for the rely Catfisha. I'm hoping it's something as simple as a loose head shield. I just need to get time to jack it up and get under there.

Jack the car up and spin the tire to see if it makes the noise.

I doubt it would be misfire or else the CEL will be on. If it has anything to do with low octane gas, the car automatically pulls the timing so there will be no pinging from the engine.

The noise is always there, but only gets louder and more frequent as the car speeds up, as if something is scraping the wheel. Jacking the car up and spinning the wheel is a good idea, thanks I'll try that. And, I use the proper octane so that's not it. Thanks for the replies. Anyone ever deal with this?
