My maint req'd light just went on and i dont know what that is
The Owner's Manual implies that the light's operation is based solely on
mileage -- that there is no real "self test" behind the scenes that is
checking oil pressure, coolant, etc. Is this true?

 

Yes. Idiot oil change light based off of 7500 miles.
