Hard shift 1st-2nd gear

Its hard to search this topic, there so much tranny info on this forum, but couldn't find this exact issue.

Every time i take off at a decent pace, theres a pretty noticeable *thud* as the car shifts to 2nd gear. Once in 2nd gear, if i accelerate the car will gear down and will make a similar hard gear change. If i leave the light like grandma, i wont notice a hard gear change.

An unrelated issue, if i floor the gas in 3rd or 4th or 5th gear, some times the car will just redline, and it seems like its having a hard time finding a gear. This happens about 80-90% of the time.

I'm thinking about getting the fluid flashed, and get a filter change...

Has anyone had this issue?? Was there a fix?? Hopefully it wasn't the start of a dying tranny??

Thanks!!!

Hard shift from 1st to 2nd is rare as both of the gaers are on the same clutch pack, usually it is 2nd to3rd. Question: If you ease gas pedal, right before gear change and resume after gear change, is it going to hard shift or slip the gear? See these transmissions are realy crappy and pretty often friction material gets trapped in oil passages and valve bodies, clogging them efficiently . From my experience ,clutch pressure control valves get clogged pretty often . I would check CPC valves and shift solenoids - these are the only things servicable from outside of the trans.

Awesome reply, thanks.

I have been starting to let off the gas right before the 1-2 change, and it does it much softer. I asked my mechanic to check CPC valves and shift solenoids, and he said he's had experience with replacing the shift solenoid on Honda auto trannies to fix this issue. I will reply with the results when i get it done this week.

As a side note, I'm surprised how quickly this happened. 4 days ago i just started noticing the gear change was slightly different. Now it feels like there is a critical problem, as its smashing into 2nd gear.

uhh u know the car is designed to be manually shifted if you so choose to do so, right?

The problem is improper design of oil passages in the transmission resulting in burnt clutch packs.........resulting in slippage and hard shifting.

I have the same issue with a hard 1-2 shift and that was after Acura replaced the tranny. Took it back and they said it was normal. Also when the tranny is still cold when I am slow in 2nd gear and need to accelerate quickly it will drop down to 1st but it wont catch 1st and will redline until I let off the gas then catch 1st. Love these trannys.

Could this be a bad transmission mount? I had a Legend that had the same problem, ended up being the mount. Very noticeable in 1-2 shifts but not so much in 2-3 and not at all in 3-4. Might be worth checking.

it won't be a durastic change unless the mount is destroyed, like completely mangled... otherwise it's tranny related most likely... however

the throttle position sensor plays a BIG roll in the smooth shifting of our autos

i notice a hard shift as well on my 98TL but it still drives fine maybe you should start driving more like "grandma" because chances are the transmission is going especially if your driving a CL or CL-S i would take it slow unless you have $3k to spend on a new tranny. Spend the bill to have it looked at by a good mechanic

personally i'd get my pressure switches cleaned out and i bet that'd be ur culprit.

unless it's literally slipping in gear or super hard to hold a gear... it's most likely going to be something like a pressure switch.... something u can fix without dropping the tranny

Well looks like it was 2nd into 3rd gear. Now first gear is all that worked. Barely made it home. I think it may be time to put her to rest.

OK so I have read this pretty thoroughly. I have found a mechanic willing to do this. I just haven't figured out why? I understand these tranny's are shit but why not get it rebuilt or get a rebuilt one with a 3 yr 100000 mile warranty on it?
If you get a donor one that has say 80000 miles on it what are you hoping to get out of this tranny? Probably the same. So why do the av6 swap? Just want to hear some rants before I make the final decision? Thx for any input.

Because there is a fault in the design of these transmissions. The AV6 doesn't have the issues at all.
Also 3 year 100000 miles..? I think that's a typo

i understand about the design issues and that is what the trans shop told me the warranty is. So that is why I was questioning the swap. Why would you do a swap when you can get a remanufactured trans with a 3yr, 100000 mile warranty ? Even with a 50000 mile warranty at least it will have one.

The accord transmission is fundamentally the same,,, the reason people use it has to do with the case redesign that alleviates the undersized oil passages. Any transmission replaced in 2008 or later on these cars has the updated case and do not fail like the old units do.

From what I understand remanufactured transmissions have 3 yr 100000 mile warranties on them. However I think they cost over 3000 grand. I'm not sure of the price yet.

I thought you can only do the swap with 06/07 Accord v6 3.0l? If that is true why bring up 2008 or greater vehicles. ?

where did you buy and quote the trannies?
Also how did your swap go? I'll be doing mine in the next two weekends or so. Just want to make sure I get all the parts I need.
Any suggestions?
