my understanding is that it is just a reminder for you to bring it in for scheduled maintenance.

nothing to worry about. the dealer will reset the light after you take it in.

then again, I am a noob and probably have no idea what I am talking about

Does anyone read the owners manual? It's really full of great info. Read yours today.

Yeah that too is in the Owners Manual but here's how to do it:

Before starting the car, hold down the select and reset button at the same time for 10 seconds.
Then while still holding them down, turn the ignition on but don't start the car
keep holding the buttons for another 10 seconds and let go
Turn the ignition off. The light should stay off now.

The ECU is just telling you it is almost time for service. perfectly normal.

Chaptorial is correct on how to turn it off. i think it will beep or something when it is done. not sure. get it serviced if you reset it though.

The service engine light will come on and blink for a few seconds when you start the car if you are nearing one of your service intervals. The ECU in the car keeps track of how many miles you have driven since the last time the service light was reset. If the service light interval is 7000 miles, I’m not sure if it is but lets just say it is, then at about 6500 miles the service engine light will begin to blink for a few seconds when you start the car. Once you exceed 7000 without the service the service engine light will stay on all the time. If you reset the light it will stop blinking for another 6500 miles but you will still need service right away!

However, if your check engine light is blinking then you need to pull the codes from the engine computer. everytime it comes on, I am pretty sure it will record a trouble code. this code will tell you why it came on even if the light goes off.

If you don't reset the light, it will eventually turn solid instead of blinking, and stay on instead of turning off,..... I've been told.

Many have been guilty of the "late" scheduled maintenance.

I would suggest looking somewhere else for the maintenance scheduled for 30k, it shouldn't be that expensive at all. I paid less than $300 for my 30k service minus the oil change.
