Now I'm confused...the unichip and the chip from allen are two different chips???What is the basic differences???Are either available right now???And also what is the difference between these and the Apex-i VAFC...cause you can change the air/fuel w/ that if I'm not mistaken???Can someone please break this down for me to understand better and also for us second gen's...our ecu's contain the codes for our keys and immobilizer system...if we replace our ecu's...how will they reprogram the new ecu to our keys w/ no hassel or a Honda PGM tester???

From what I can tell in the original post, Allen is working on a program for the UniChip for the CL:

ok guys heres the lowdown.opak racing in california is making the piggyback unichip for our cars.their
With this being the case the term chip ended up being incorrectly used and should be disregarded.

The UniChip is significantly different from a VAFC as it ends up controlling the injectors and the ignition coils. The VAFC just alters the MAP signal to the ECU which has limited capability in fuel control. But since the UniChip intercepts and alters the signals to each injector and coil the capability is greatly expanded. Plus, the UniChip has a prgrammable map which allows you to tune over a wide ranges of engine load.

I spoke with Allen at Opak Racing - (707)935-3999/(707) 584-9300 about installing the UNICHIP on my CLS 6 speed with CT intake/headers/b-pipe/exhaust and he told me the following:
 • They are working on the CL and other Acura model maps.
 • In order to come up with various ECU rempappings for the CLS, they need to start with a fully stock CLS (or a fully modded car temporarily put back to stock) to do the initial optimized map for a stock CLS.
 • Using the same stock CLS, add back in one mod at a time to create a new map for each mod.
 • Ultimately, the end result would be maps for various mod configurations for our CLs.
 • Allen told me that the guinne pig would get the UNICHIP fully installed, mapped and dyno'd only for their cost for the UNICHIP hardware.
 • Each type of mod (intake/headers/cat-back/axle-back) changes the engine's flow characteristics and usually adds peaky performance gains are higher RPMs while causing power losses at lower RPMs. By remapping the timing and A/F values for the engine, those peaky gains and low-end losses can be flattened out to provide more low-end power and a flatter power curve.

I have CT intake/headers on my CLS 6sp and only live about 1 1/2 hours away from Opak Racing, but I've already sold my stock intake and headers. Otherwise, I'd do it.

Here's what I understand about the UNICHIP. It's not a computer chip as some have inferred, it's a fully programmable computer that's connected between the ECU and the engine. It stores the ECU map offsets values for timing and F/A for various RPMs and load conditions. All it does is add its mapped offset values (+/- 1, 2, 3, etc...) to the ECU's mapped values. It does not reprogram the factory ECU map but stores the mapped offset values itself. So if you disconnect it, car goes back to stock.

I think $700 is very reasonable for at least a 10% WHP gain (25-35 WHP depending on what mods are installed) considering some people pay $4-5k for a SC and only get about 54WHP gain.

One other thing, even after there are maps available for our cars, each car is different enough (stock vs. stock) that you can have a custom map done for your car to get additional gains for an additional $200.

You want to borrow my stock pieces for this. I have everything which was only on the car for less than 1000 miles.

If you are serious, I might take you up on that. I have a 2003 CL Type-S 6 speed. However, I've been told there are some slight differences between the auto and 6 speed parts. Not quite sure what, but that's what Acura says cause some P/Ns are different. To keep things simple, I'd only consider using 2003 CL Type-S 6 speed stock intake and headers. The other problem is you appear to be located in Woodstock, GA. Not sure I want to deal with shipping parts both ways. Would get a little expensive. Unless... Allen would also give you a deal for participating.

Anyway, I need to get the CT exhaust and b-pipe (if available) installed next month before I consider the UNICHIP. I might just have them do a custom mapping on my car and not bother becoming a guinne pig.

With this set up we should be able to move the vtec and rev limit, add larger injectors, lower the fuel pressure to the point that the stock regulator will do the job instead of running the higher fuel pressures with the FMU, and then run the boost up to the point the blower looses eficiency,....10 psi, maybe.

If So Cal is a little closer to you... I offer all my stock parts as well (unfortunately this only amounts to the Header and air-box).

this doesn't pose any warranty issues does it? I told eric I wouldn't mind letting my car go for a day or 2. I am all stock 5AT. Does this mean they then would need a modded 5AT to do the map for each mod? What about a 6spd? Aren't they going to need a 6spd test vehicle too? I'll call them on monday and see what's up.

Well, we are in luck as I own an '03 6-Speed.

For me the shipping is not an issue. I just ship it on my company's UPS account.

Thanks again to Types1967 for initiating this. I spoke with Allen this morning and volunteered my 5-sp auto (S/C, headers, exhaust) as soon as he is ready for it (about a month from now)

so will this work for the autos?

how will it affect the warranty?

so there will be different piggy back computers or will there be one specifically for i/h/e?

Thanks to everyone pushing and volunteering! I agree with Type R that someone needs to also get them an auto with H/I. I'd offer my TLS if it were somewhere in the NE area.

Sweet! and it Auto too huh? This should help as I am sure that S/Ced people will all be getting this and it is nice to know that our chances of getting customized maps for the blower are a close reality, Thanks!

types1967, I hope you don't mind if I help this effort along...

I've got some additional info:

I spoke with Jack at The Racers Group, the distributor of UNICHIP. UNICHIP is a piece of hardware that's been around for about 10 years and is made in I believe S. Africa. I also spoke with Allen at Opak Racing who is working for Jack to develop the maps for the Acura and Honda models, include the CL.

Allen said there are several phases to this development.

Start with one car only that has some mods but can be downgraded to full stock. He will need the car for as much as 3 days to put in UNICHIP, temporary wiring and remap car with different setups; fully stock and with different mods. A prototype wiring harness will be modeled from the temporary harness. When car is handed back over to who ever the guinne pigs is, the car needs to be returned after 250 miles to verify that everything is working correctly. After a week or so, the temporary wiring harness will be replaced with a newly manufactured harness.

So this is what you will get for donating your car and several hundred dollars for the cost of some hardware:
*Dyno Charts, stock vs. modded
*Full installation
*Custom remapping
*And the bragging rights

Next, will probably need two more or more cars to further develop and verify maps and hardware and to prepare for CARB certification.
I've decided to wait until my car has all the CT goodies (intake,headers,b-pipe,exhaust) and only do the mapping for my configuration. I don't really want to put it back to stock. So I'm hoping to be a second round guinne pig.

Quick Reply: update on chip!!
