Spun much worse this time.
I could not leave with anything but a crawl off the line or it was like in slow motion just spinning like I was on wet ground.
searching my local craigs for some other tire options.
I am 210 lighter and went with 215 40's where last time was 225 40's.
trust me,power is beasting.
Before when my car had a base motor and was basically stock it ran 9.7-9.8 at 76 on 225 40's
time before 9.0 at 82 on 225 40's
yesterday 9.3 at 76 on 215 40's
tires will tell all because i'm going withh a little taller and wider next time.

Get some larger tires. I have 255s (Continental DW) and still have traction issues . I dont know how you are even attempting to hook up with 215 or 225's with your motor Im hoping to get new barrels for my rims this winter to allow me to run a 275 (with fender work)

Yea 215s are definitely hurting your ET, but not your trap. Spinning at the line has little to do with your trap speed. If anything, more traction will yield a slightly less trap speed. Not sure how/why you are trapping 76mph in the 1/8th. Like I said you should be trapping at least 83-84. What was your 60' on both runs? I'm still having a hard time with the fact that you had a worse 60' this time out. You trapped 6mph less. That's HUGE. And still were only slower by 0.3. That's decent in the 1/8th, but I'd think 6mph would take care of that.
Did you ever dyno? Timing belt change? Valve adjustment? Something isn't right. Did you do something since the last time you went to the track besides weight reduction? If everything went as planned, you should've trapped 83.x-84 in the 1/8th by losing 210 lbs since you went 82mph last time. How were the conditions? Even still, a 6mph loss is like losing 60hp, yet the only thing you 'lost' is 210 lbs. Like you said, you trapped 76 with the stock motor. If I were you I'd be pissed. You don't sound pissed.
Like I said, your tires have nothing to do with your poor trap speed. They will certainly help your ET though. Is your IIRC working? Maybe it got stuck closed? I'm hurtin' for you man, the 3.7 should be beast!

So you have some type of idea how my 3 runs actually went for me,
Weather was perfect, and track wasnt probally preped the best because I was there really early and it was only a test and tune day.
1st. rolled threw the water and gave a few spins to the line. spun in first spun ,again in 2nd then was started to hook 30ft out. ran like 10.2 at 72mph.
2nd run, went around the water in the other lane ,left the light ,rolled out and still spun in first ,let off a little then got on it with hard wheel hop and the rest of the run was ok after it stopped.
got 9.4 forgot the mph.
3rd run, I ran the same lane this time I gave a couple of spins to the line I babied the car trying not to spin any and gave it no full throttle till I was mid way threw 2nd and got 9.3 76
76 from 82 is a big loss. The car sure has not lost any power, I drive it. It just has no traction anymore.
I took about 75lbs off the front so I think that might be a considering factor aswell to the no traction.
no to metion the 20lbs off for the cf hood and misc.lighting engine mods and smaller battery weight.
so 105lbs + off the front of a stock cl
I want to try "atleast" a 245 but, looking into wider options in the front to see if it gets better
Never had a dyno. maybe someday.
At the time I just want a faster et.

For a faster ET you need larger tires. You can fit 245s on a 7.5" wheel, but that's as big as you can fit.

I don't see the removed weight as being the problem with traction. Even with some weight removed the cl still has atleast 60 percent or more weight over the front wheels. That is more weight over drive wheels than any rwd car besides maybe porsche.
Tires and stock mounts seem like the limiting factor to me.
Removing weight isn't gonna help you that much with 1/8 times. It would only be a few tenths.

taking weight off the front would let it spin easyier since I was already having a problem with the 225's.
I got the tires for 50 bucks and just checked the spec's
215 40 18 480 A A v rated kumho solus . and I came from
225 40 18 340 AAA y rated nexen 3000.
What the best bang for the buck in a 245 40 18 ?
Anyone ?

Thanks for the tire recomendations guys.
Still trying to find tires.
After going threw my own posts I also found that I changed out my rear coilovers to struts and springs after my best run.
I don't know if that contribuated to some off the loss but,
I took them out because the lower bushings were starting to come out and after no help from Nex on replacements I decided today to pull them out to figure out my own.
They look basically like oem size holding one next to my rear struts.
Going to the parts stores to see if I can get the right bushings and get them back in while I got everything out.
After some reading stiff rear suspension works good for fwd to get traction so I got to get those back in.

I've been looking at 245 Nitto NT 05's for the fronts but they are only 200tw.
I don't really know the differnces between tread wear and actual feel of the grip.
And they are 322 shipped for the pair.
I want to be able to leave the line with all I have but I want to have them last at least a year also.
Will the xs's be able to do that and would they actually work any better for straght line acceration for the price of the NT 05's?

Wow, havent posted in this thread in a while. Im the dde that bought the hood off you when I had wrecked me CL. Good to see you got the motor in and running. Looks like a beast. You have any parts for a CL-S? That your wanting to sell?
#976
The lower the tread wear typically the softer the rubber they are and the less mileage you will get out of them. I have 255s (conti DW) and they are a 320 treadwear but very sticky and i still have traction issues, but i am able to launch pretty hard with them. I have run 235s in a 180 and still had issues in 1st and could spin them in 2nd (though i am manual). Nto5s are a sticky tire.

Lets see if I don't regret not getting the 100tw nt05's.
wider, taller, and stickier they should hook up alot better.
Going back to the track this weekend.
the car is quite a bit faster than before, well if I can get the tires not to spin.
spinning anytime in 1st and spinning 15-20 feet of 2nd kind of sucks.
Hopefully that will be remedied soon.
Not to sure on parts that I might have. If I come across something I let you know.

Good purchase. Track prep and tire pressure also play a large role. I'm on 215/55s Hankook Ventus V4s and pulled a 2.07 60' on Saturday @ 28psi. Of course I'm on the 3.0L so I'm not making as much torque as you and I am also MT. Point being wider isn't always better.

I just check the weight of my rear tires and the front tires on there now.
And the fronts weigh 3lbs lighter each.
So I guess I will put them on the back when i put on the new fronts.
I don't know what kind of gains from that but, I'm sure it won't hurt.

Swapped the lighter tires to the back and got the fronts off waiting impatiently for my new one's.
And since the rear is already lifted I decided to pop in some spring boosters on my eibach's to help with the weight transfer.
Fastest mod I ever did, since I car was allready lifted.

Why not just get a set of slicks to use at the track? That will solve your traction problems I'm sure. I run continental dws 235/45-18's daily driving on my a spec wheels which are 8 inches wide. They hook up well for a street tire depending on what type of pavement I'm on.

Although the lower the thread wear does result in stickier tires, what matters the most is what are those tires intended for. For instance, my falken azenis 615's have a 200 threadwear BUT are meant for cornering which makes them have a stiffer sidewall intended for improved handling. Where as tires meant for straight line racing would result in a softer sidewall intended for improved acceleration out of the dig.
The nitto nt05 are for touring/cornering racing where as the nt05R are meant for drag racing.

Finnally got the tires.
These are definitly more sticky.
Just with me rubbing my finger accross the tread I feel like I could remove rubber.
As soon as I get the the front coilovers adjusted I will get a couple pics I reveiw of the grip situation and hopefully a better time this weekend if it's not too cold.

Tryied them on before adjusting my suspension.
I went for a ride down my street and back and first off I never knew what sticky tires were till now. Instintly I was picking up every piece of sand, tinging it all in the wheel wheels.
I did not see too much better in performance I guess that had to do with how cold it was.
One thing I did notice was I floored for like 1sec and let off.The car spun only drivers side, but left 25 feet off darker rubber than before.I mean I just basically pump the peddle to the floor and once the wheels were spinning I let off and it left 25 foot one legger.
Before it would leave 2 wheels and be half as dark.
Cant wait to get them out and warmed up to see if the car does better.
With me spinning one wheel now ,does it means the other is hooking up better?
I guess I need some sort of diff upgrade and some nice warm asphalt.

One thing about tires like these is they really aren't supposed to be driven in low temps. The rubber likes/needs warmer temps to operate at maximum.. If you were spinning one tire odds are the other wasn't. Most likely there was more traction than the dif could handle causing 1side to slip.
#989
I was considering it but,You did not respond to me about your fitment for like 9 days ,and I don't think I want 18" slicks. Only other reason is my house is about 5 miles away from the track.

I found a perfomance related issue today going around the car.
I had a hung up caliper in the passenger side rear.
I wonder how long it's been like that.I could just barley turn the wheel with the tire off the ground .thats how tight it was.
At first I thought something was wrong with the ebrake but ,after trying to adjust the shoes threw the hole for 10 minutes I had to get the caliper off to check what was going on.
As the caliper bolts started to get loose you could see the caliper and rotor wanted to come off in one piece.
The pads and rotors look fine.
I'm going to mess with the caliper and see if I need I knew one.
I hope the brake was hanging up the last time I was at the track

Put some hands all over the car today.
I installed a new rear caliper, tightend up the spring boosters, lifted the front coilovers a 1/4".and removed the butterfly bridge and the center post inside the manifold for the full butterfly delete, also fully cleaned the mani.
And removed another 10lbs from the car.
I got a chance to do some riding today with it being 58-60 degrees.
These tires are hooking up better with the warmer they get.
I'm not able to spin anymore of 2nd and going around faster bends felt more stable in the steering wheel but,at slow speeds these tires feel really soft, spongy like.
These things would stick like glue in mid summer months.
I wish I lived somewhere like texas for a day

Today I took a 1sq foot piece of my sound deadener out and it weighed .6 lbs and I think I got about 125 sq feet in the car.
Thats about 75lbs and I think Brian said the he removed 30 something from the factory deadening.
That would be atleast another 100lb loss.
Should I go threw removeing all the deadening or keep it for perhaps to help with resale vaule if I ever parted ways with the car ?

Well the decision has been made. Drivers door is stripped so far.
I will weigh it when I'm done but,I think 12-15lbs came off of the first door.
Lets see if I can get it all out before sundays test n tune.

I ended up getting about 3/4 of the edead sound deadener out before I went.
Still have the rest to do and the oem deadener. So I guess I will see another improvement next time.
Made it to the track today. Once I got the tires to start hooking up I ran 8.9 at 80mph. And by the time I ran that by running 23psi the engine was probally dealing with alot of heat soak running 6 back to back runs.
I think it should be able to do 8.8 as it is now wich is fine with me.
I think I got maybe 60lbs more of deadener in the car to come out.
Hoping to get to 8.7 the next go

Hmmm ,what up with the grill and tips....
They might be on there because I like them. That doesnt take a genius to figure out ,does it ?
Anyway,at one point I was going to do a old school look with flakes and all gold.
Only pieces I needed to do at the time was handles, window trim and wipers but, the gold spoke rims I bought rode like trash so I removed some of the gold but left the grill and tips.
The gold gives it more flash than plain silver.
Should I put back in my silver grill and change up my exhaust because your ready for a change or should I wait till I'm done with the look ?
Maybe I should just change it now for you.
