Started on some in home porting
So far I've just started on the lower runners.
I enlarge the runners threw the middle and have taken them up 120 grit so far.
My gaskets and spacer should be here tomorrow. Then I'll can figure how far to flare the openings to port match.
I will only take them up to 180-220 grit range,that should be plenty slick.
Spacer will be next followed by the manifold right threw to the throttle body.
Then when my headers arrive, It will be getting put on all at once for hopefully some decent gains.
It don't look it but,these are smooth.And haven't been clean yet since there not done.
.Just some side by sides so you guys can see how ruff our runners are.

Trickflow porting kit,with regular old dremel,well not old ,just bought a new one so it wouldn't s!@# the bed.The dremel will probally be junk by the time I'm done.They take alot of abuse grinding.
The kit has 60,80,120grit, and it a decent size kit for 35 bucks

It's larger for sure.Since I'm the guy that did it I'm sure I did.There will be more pics in the next couple days.
From each runner left/right If you put your fist on the table.I got about half the size.in aluminum to toss.
I'd have to say thats a bit more than polishing.
Also I don't think I was doing much polishing at 60grit.
It just dont look any larger to you because the inlet/outlets are not done.
Tomorrow they will be done and I will post other pics.
Also some my say it's crazy but I'm going to port the intake side of the heads while still on the block.
By stuffing rags in as deep as I can and match port the runners ,vacume and pull the rags.

Is there any science to this? Like how do you know how much to take off especially in the middle of the runner? I know about port matching. Are the runners pretty thick? I'm planning on doing this myself over the winter. I have a spare motor so I'm going to pull the lower runners off that and do those. Assuming they come out good I'll use them and repeat with the one's from my motor, I should be good at porting/polishing by then and will most likely sell the second pair for more mods. I plan to get a glass like finish, I know some people may think that is excessive but who cares every little bit helps. I have everything to do it up to 1200 grit wet sand paper. What do you recommend to start at 60 grit or was that too excessive? Then step up by 20, 40, 60, 80, 140, 240, 400, 200? So it would go 60, 80, 120, 180, 220, 360, 600, 1000, 1200 (600-1200 wet sand). Not sure if its 360 or 480 that I have or if one isn't made lol.

Porting yes, polishing no. There needs to be some turbulence in the port to promote good mixing as the fuel atomizes and vaporizes. The surface roughness causes a turbulent boundary layer which is actually thinner than a laminar boundary layer == more effective flow area.

You can make wall thickness perfect or close with special tools.
I'm just trying to eye ball out a couple of millimeters.
I used a screw driver with a fat handle pushing the handle in the runners.one that would not go in all the way.
Then I keep grinding till it did,and as far as each of the other runners.
Thats how I'm getting them close to even.
If your removing weight from your project.
I say start atleast 60 grit or carbite mandrels,they will remove metels quicker and will out last the cartridge rolls.
All those stages of grinding to finishing is not nessesary.
Mine might go one step higher than 120. But thats it.And thhats if I can find the right stuff.Maybe might try some metal polish and buffing wheels ?

All those little indents are there to create little pockets of turbulent air that basically spin around and around in each indentation. So... each indent has it's own bit of air moving in circles in it, this basically allows the rest of the air (the air pushing around the gold ball) to pass by the gold ball without touching the actual surface (because the air is passing over OTHER air). Creating less drag.. and therefore a further shot.
So technically smoother is not NECESSARILY better.
Daily Planet had a segment on this vinyl they stuck on a Porsche. the vinyl mimicked the physics of a golf ball whereby it too had these circular indentations which in turn.. created less drag due to the gold ball explanation.
They timed multiple runs with the car normal and with the vinyl applied and resulted in a 2-2.5 sec DECREASE in lap time.
Keep in mind the vinyl still weighed i'm sure like 10 pounds at least, and still it made the car faster.
I just thought I'd share that, because that shattered my perception of smoother = faster.
So maybe there is an exact science to maximizing the efficiency of the internals of a motor's hydraulics ?

I got one of the intakes sides opened up to match the mdx spacer. Now I just got to finish up to 120
Intake side is 3/32" to 1/8" bigger roughly.
There's enough room to pull another 1/16" or so but,I dont think I'm going to go any farther since the spacer is pretty dam smooth as it is.
Well see thou cuz I forgot to by the lower gaskets so I can open that side up.
Acura takes their dam sweet time sending parts.
I also got a handful of zex jets to play with today.
And my dam headers won't be here till the 24th.
So I got time to mess with them.
For those that cant see the diferance,look at where the gasket use to lay around the ports in referance to where I have the ports opened to.
Also I don't know why but,the factory holes were offset a little Where they would line up horrible??????/

factory holes lining up, just remember there are manufactoring tolerences (should be better though), and they are producing how many hundard of thousands of these motors
and i did see what you were meaning for what you are asking tom when i had to adjust the valves and such

No,No it fits fine.
The gasket over laps more on one side of the port ,so the spacer does the same.
It actually makes a lip in the port cuz of this .And I'm guess taken that lip off is going to be highly benifical.since it is highly restrictive

Have you done the intake manifold or do you plan on doing it? Otherwise, this is a wasted effort.

I plan on going right threw the manifold right out the throttle body,Including the throttle body.If it don't flow enough then go threw the 09 manifold and type s TB
O yea I'm part collecting over this winter also.
Plan on having a pretty quick cl p this spring (Till the tranny dies)

I would have to say in the spring the bolt on cls guys might get catch beat downs if they want to run.
I do plan on putting in some work.
No S/C here,
I'm thinking a fully worked pair of type s heads w/custom parts would probally net me just as much. Also probally be a little easier to tune in the long run.
Not sure if I want to bump compression up or not,since I do want to be able to run a big shot.
Even with the work thats going to be done in the next couple days,my bolt ons,and my 100shot.
I would have to say thats enough to run down alot of cls's

Now they will get there final touching up tonight,and I will only polish threw the spacer for now.
As soon as I get the throttle body and the botom lower runner gaskets the rest will be getting done.
