I don't think a radar detector can help you with proof of insurance.

53 in a 35 sounds like you need a V1...don't skimp on protection.

The ones I’ve seen on EBAY seem to range from 250 to 350 bucks, but they usually don’t have the latest version of the software.

Spend a bit more and get the newest version and a warranty to boot.

It's like getting flood insurance after the Great Flood of 1999.

Get the V1 from their website. It's about $410 shipped. The ones on ebay are less, but you need the lastest 1.8 version. You have to upgrade those units, which might be more. The passport 8500 is cheaper at about $250-$270 off of ebay. Direct from Escort is like $299. The V1, & 8500 should be the only 2 choices. Everything else is not up to par.

funny yet so true..... People bitch about the cost of a good detector like the V1 or Escort 8500, but then they bitch when they get a ticket. Personally I love the V1. The bogey counter and the directional indicators own me. Combined with the remote display you're good to go....

Here is the link to the instructions…..

As for what you need to buy extra from the detector……NOTHING.
Everything is included in the V1 package to “hard wire” like I have shown.

If you want the remote display, that’s an extra 39 dollars I believe.

Not too sure about THAT particular model, but I know I’ve read that there is reduced performance when running ANY wireless detector off a battery.

C&D ran test on the wireless detectors a while back. Verdict: not-so-good. I couldn't find the article tho.

I have a Bel 980 and have used it for the last 2 years. A good radar (Ebay is selling Bel 985 for $220) would be your choice if you cannot afford the $400+

The one ticket I got was cause I did not use my radar detector. I was so pissed at myself.

The other thing that you have to realise about your radar is that you really have to get used to using it. I can pretty much tell now when I am getting a false reading versus a real one. What is so cool is when it goes off and you look around and there is a police car catching speeders.

Get one!!

Hasn't gone off around any cops huh? That's not a good sign.

Anyway, I use to have that device. I didn't know what they were called either....Passport, Solo, Escort, Cincinnati Microwave, whatever. All I know is that being cordless, the sensitivity was diminished...greatly.

Find one of those standalone radar units and drive by cordless noting the range. Try a second pass using DC power. Note the difference. If you can live with it, you are cordfree. If you find it to be a pathetic miscalculation/oversight/poor judgment (like I did), you'll find the highest bridge in town and toss your Solo crashing to the pavement below (which I thought about).

v1 is soo expensive DAYUMN, its 400 bucks for the radar unit, then its another 50 bucks for the remote.

450 straight off. I want to attach it to the visor above my head in the corner, should I do that? do i need to buy the 10 dollar visor mount or does it come with one initially? Dont I need the hard wire stuff as well, whats best, there is like 2-3 diff ones.

k
Thanks

Nick

I have the BEL 960 and it does a good job for the price about 210-ish. The voice warning is nice feature that I like on 960. Nothing like a radar detector screaming "LASER" to get your attention in the morning

I have mine hardwired and hooked to the passenger visor. The clip came with the detector. I do not need the remote, because i feel it's hidden enough from view there. V1 is awesome.

Beg, borrow and steal, dude! A year or two from now, you'll realize how "inexpensive" the V1 really is!

a V1 can't do shit if they time you using VASCAR.

All local roads around here have several white stripes painted on them. There is no getting around getting caught if you're a lead footer.

for the budget minded peeps id recommend BEL. The reason why battery powered units dont work as well is because they turn on and off constantly to save battery, whereas the DC powered units can afford to scan 24/7. There are only 3 models I would consider using. Depending on how much you are willing to spend, the BEL, 8500, and V1 are $100 dollars apart with the cheapest starting at $200.

I do not like it when the radar is obvious (like on the dash or stuck on the windscreen). What I do with mine, is stick it on the passenger seat (between the top of the seat and bottom of headrest). It works well enough and the good thing too is that when I have my music cranked, I can still hear it since it is right next to my ears.

Mine has the City & Highway setting. Does not seem to make a difference either way, so I just leave it on Highway setting all the time.
