Okay, I'm not a racer by any means, but last night I need to get over to the left lane and it was the next light so I gunned it to get there. I passed a silver prelude in doing so, but did not "cut him off" or anything. So the left turn signal goes green and I just go as usual, but the prelude is like sticking on my ass. So I floor it some more to get ahead and on the freeway. Well the guy keeps pace well, but when I pull to the middle, he blows by me and starts weaving through traffic. Further up, he slows and I catch up cuz I'm still going like 85 which I normally do. Then he guns it as soon as I approach.

I'm NOT racing, but this guys wants to race obviously and I'm talking to my buddy on the phone (with a headset, so chill) so I'm REALLY not wanting to race while talking either. Finally, I start passing him and this hand comes out the window with a "thumbs down". WTF? Did I do something? I was gonna give the finger, but I was more confused than pissed.

Is there some sorta "how to race in traffic" book out there? If the person uses hazards or high beams or sticks his hand out, what does it all mean?

don't worry, those are the typical ricers, they think anything is a race (and they'll do anything to get one too) including the old guy on a bike...think on the positive side, one day his hand will get cut off if he keeps on doing that

some civic (stock, with those cheap ass primax wheels) turned his hazards on in the middle of traffic (he thought he won, although the only thing i did was let him cut me off)

some slammed stock accord was tailing me until i got on the freeway...i showed his wassup, dropped it into 2nd and bye byeeeee ricer i slowed down to about 75, cruising in the middle lane...i waited about 5 seconds until he caught up, he goes into the fast lane...the dumbass passenger flashes the peace sign, and the driver puts on his hazards...i do the same for about 2 seconds, acknowledging that i wasn't racing...that fool leaves them on for about 10 seconds until he got off the next exit...what an idiot!

Well, the best way to avoid the thumbs down is beat it into the head of everybody who wants to race you!!! I don't car who wants to race....Civics, Metros, handicap people in their motorized wheelchairs!! If they wanna race, I'm gonna give them a spanking they won't forget and then they'll think twice before they race me again!!!
BTW, give it a few more months...and people will avoid a race with me like the plague...

Reminds me of the time I was coming back from the titty bar with 4 other guys packed in my 328is. An IS300 pulls up next to me with no one else in it except for the driver and floors it. Of course, he zooms way ahead and then slows down and flashes his hazards. What a nut we all thought.

Not really. If you're racing someone and you're behind them, then you know that they won already.

Flashing your hazards is kinda like a slap in the face to the other guy. You're basically saying, "I just ate your lunch, looza...." It's sorta disrespecful.

Back in the early 80's (and even earlier than that), I remember guys rigging up their reverse lights to a switch. When they were out looking for a street race, they would flip the switch so that the reverse lights were always on.

A Camaro/Mustang or whatever with its reverse lights on was ALWAYS someone looking for a race.

Basically, just let the fuggin' jerkoff take off I do it all the time - seems like at every other light, someone wants to take me on. Personally, I keep the racing on the track, so I leave as usual and don't waste anytime with 'em. Well, unless they are just begging for an ass whuppin'

 

That's called a Sierra Club bumper sticker, or something along the lines of "My kid is star 4th grader at So-and-so Elementary" or "Baby on board."

Count to two -- if you're lucky and they are not, let 'em enter the intersection before you. Great for clearing out the intersection from "late" red light runners!


(Sorry, only works when hot seat drivers want to charge through intersection, for a race, while your stopped on the red light...)
