My CL-s has been doin this for a long while now. I keep asking the dealer about it and I never can seem to get an answer out of them. They say they have a car that's doin it on the idle, but not at driving speeds. Here's the story...

Goin up hills, crusin down a street and when I get around 4k I start hearin this knockin, sounds like I am drivin my dad's 'ol pickup up the hill...any ideas people?

Gas for the car, that is...

 

Well, I live in CA, so all we can get is 91. I have tried every different manf. gas supplier in the area. But I don't think this is case. I drive it a lot 16k miles in 9 months, and I get gas everywhere in SoCal and I still consistantly get the same knocking. I drive my car hard and push it but never past where it would hurt the car. I grew up in a car family, restored many a car and it sounds like a misfiring problem. back to the gas quality, dealer even said when I picked up the car that I could get away w/ 89 octane.

 

Are you lugging the engine at all? Try a lower gear in a knocking situation and see if it helps. Did the dealer pull any computer codes?

 

Try to put some octane bouster or some 104 racing fuel....

then see if the knocking is gone...

 

well that octane booster doesn't really work ... i'd look for a nice (unleaded) 94 -97 octane race gas ... phillips 66 has it around here, not sure about out that way ... our tracks have a 94 octane "west coast blend"

 

If its not the gas I would say that the timing is too advanced. But we can't adjust the timing on our car, right?

I am goin to call the dealer right now and demand a answer as to what causes this. I can't imagine it would be a timing issue being so new, the car's assembly date is 4/01/01 (I know, april fools...but I took this one becasue all the others were early, I actually wanted on made on 4/20)

 

ok, its goin to the dealer on thursday and they are gonna hook the computer up to and check it out. I will post the info when I get it. I am also gettin a full detail job outta this too. wahoo! saves me elbow for another 6 months.
