New to us 2011 RDX

Hi everyone, my wife's 2010 Equinox piece of junk 2.4l recently crossed the 100k mile mark and started misfiring lol haven't found the issue yet after changing injectors, and a few coils. Replaced the ridiculously stretched timing chain at around 85k along with whatever else was damaged in there. Want to set that car on fire. Anyway, was thinking of possible cars for my wife and happened to check Copart for RDXs since I've always wanted to get her one. Saw this one coming up and put a $1k max bid on it and forgot about it, thinking it'll probably go for a lot more. Next day get an email saying "time to pay the piper, boy."Ended up winning it for $750, run and drive. After fees came out to $1200. My dad went and picked it up with my bro in law and parked it at his place in Yelm. I picked it up the next weekend and drove it down to Vancouver. Runs great, I absolutely love this car, the most fun car I've had yet. The wife likes it to so that works out. I've been dailying it while my RL is stuck in the garage waiting to be put back together still and my wife isn't working right now since she's pregnant. Needs A/C compressor changed I think, I ordered some parts including condenser and radiator and did some minor maintenance so far. Will be a mild build, we'll see since it's her car, but hey, if the car "needs" a fmic and 2.5" exhaust, what are you gonna do, amiright?

That side damage was what totaled it I guess

Pretty decent condition given the mileage. Not impressed with the fake leather Acura used, compared to the mint full grain in my KA9

Had it detailed right away

Scrape goes all the way along the side, front bumper to rear

No check engine light, no error codes, only no sound from the radio/stereo

Your story sounds familiar, lol. I had a 2010 Equinox 2.4l that was about to explode it's second engine. I replaced it with a 2010 RDX AWD Tech (230,000km now). I've had to replace a few things in the last few years (tires, struts, spark plugs, alternator, etc.) but still love it. Before replacing the AC compressor make sure that the fuse / relay (I can't remember which it was) under the hood is good. My AC didn't work at first but it just needed that changing and good to go. You won't like the gas mileage or having to use premium gas, though. Other than that it's a blast.

Yeah the equinox isn't a terrible car for what it is, except that cursed engine and some other stuff lol.
My ac compressor works but doesnt blow cold air. And I see freon leaking from either it or the hose so I ordered replacements just going to swap it all. At 200k it probably could use a refresh I suppose.

I was going to suggest swapping the relay also, (since it is a semi common problem) but it sounds like you already on top of the problem

CONGRATS ON THE RDX, it sounds like you got a heck of a deal!

Thank you! This car has been a blessing, the timing was perfect too because I was driving my mom in laws Rav4 while she was out of town for like a month after the equinox started acting up and got the rdx like the week before she returned so was able to jump in it and go.
And to top it all it's just so fun to drive after the gutless equinox, and while the rav4 has some pep in its step, it's loud inside and super uncomfortable lol

My wife's Equinox was getting 16-19 mpg lol obviously something wrong with it but that's how it was the last few years, luckily she didn't drive far for work. I had a 99 4runner 5 speed that averaged 15-17 mpg and then a 99 es300 that was around 20 mpg as well I think.
I've been getting 19-21 on the RDX so far and thats not driving eco mode plus with a lot more get up and go than the equinox lol so I'm not too upset about that. I must say sometimes I miss the plush, boat cruise ride of the es300 and the silky smooth v6, that seemed like my dog's favorite car lol but it couldn't take turns at all haha

Goodies arrived!

Found a discount when searching online and got this for 200 shipped. Arrived 3 days after I ordered i think.

Removed the stock sway bar at my work shop but my end links didn't want to be reused so I had to cut them/smack them off with a BFH and zip tied the new bar to keep it from drooping while I get new ones tonight or tomorrow. Was really looking forward to seeing the difference on the freeway ramps after work!

Excited to see progress! I picked up my RDX at almost the exact same mileage (196,6XX). Let me know how the Progress bar changes the feel of the car....I'm not planning on lowering mine until spring, but I definitely need to snag the sway bar soon.

nice, how long have you had it now?
waiting on links to arrive on Saturday and I'll install them. I was surprised to see that the handling was not as bad as I expected with the sway bar disconnected. I had a 7th gen civic sedan and a stock 13mm or whatever it was rear bar was night and day so I kind of expected the same thing here lol
I have seen others say that the upgrade was not as dramatic as expected but I'm sure it'll help with the body roll still. I'm not planning on lowering it either probably just better tires in the future with stiffer sidewalls

I picked it up at the end of Feb 2023. Just hit 220k miles last week. I put a ton of miles on the car this past year, as I moved 2500 miles across the country. Been relatively problem free so far, and this is the lowest mileage Honda/Acura I've had in a while LOL.

Ugraded tires will be a nice difference too. Did you plan on going with different wheels as well? I went with 19x9.5s and run a 275/40. A huge improvement in grip, and handling. Cutting down from a 55 profile tire to a 40 really livens it up.

Yes I would like to get lighter wheels if possible in the future. The tires on it currently are like brand new so that's not a priority at the moment though.
Do the 40 profile tires add much to the harshness inside the car? That would be my biggest concern since it's my wife's car and not mine lol
But i probably need to update the suspension because sometimes it feels pretty harsh to me but no squeaks or major symptoms of common worn components, except on bumps the clunk in the rear.

Its not rough by any means. Its a lot less "floaty" than the stock wheel setup, you feel more road feedback and improved response to your steering inputs. You are cutting down the side profile from 55 to 40, but you're also going 40mm wider. So while it is a shorter sidewall, its not a rubber band tire by any means. Still plenty of meat. You could even go 275/45 if you wanted a bit more beef.

Curious why you chose the valvoline ATF?

Its almost agreed unilaterally that OEM (ATF-DW1) is the only fluid you should use in the transmission. With some older 80s/90s cars, other stuff may be an option, but anything more modern should be run on the OEM ATF. I can speak from previous experience of buying a Honda that had other fluid in it, and had shifting issues until I replaced with the OEM fluid. All the other fluids I'll run whatever I can get cheap, but ATF I'll pay the little bit extra for OEM. The last thing I want to do is have to replace the transmission unexpectedly. Just my .02 cents.

Hmm, I feel like I've read a bunch of people saying maxlife works well.... I know when I was looking into doing my bros '16 pilot apparently the concensus was honda only, but I assumed our generation was okay using valvoline.
I was going to use it on my 04 RL so I got a bunch.
I'll have to do some more reading before I use this then

Hondas really love the OEM fluid. I would go that route.

Sway bar links installed today after work, tested it out on the drive home. I approve 👌
holds much flatter on the ramps, reaching the tires limits now vs fighting body lean. I would recommend it, if someone is considering it.

Stopped by Heeltoe the other day since I was working in the area and got some stainless brake lines. Also spoke to Marcus regarding doing another run of ATLP exhaust, he said he isn't opposed to getting it done as long as he has like 8-10 prepaid orders. Don't know how many people would be interested, might have to start a feeler thread and see if it's within the realm of possibilities.

Just stumbled upon this thread and looks like you've done some really good work. I just picked up my '07 a couple months ago as well and have been slowly learning about this platform. I would definitely be interested in the ATLP exhaust, so you can mark me down for one!

I actually haven't done much to the car yet except a detail and sway bar, just stocking up parts so far, haven't had time to install anything yet. Sounds good, I might make a post on the Facebook group as well and see how many people are interested.

I also noticed that you're from WA too. I'm actually in south King County, near Auburn.
