Navi Systems
Navi Systems
Hey all, would you guys (given the choice) rather have an aftermarket Navi/Video system or an Acura one?
I'm thinking about doing the conversion and would love to have your opinions.

I want to do the conversion too, as it looks the best, being stock and all but lets face it, that technology is at least 5 years old now. The conversion will run you near 1k and lots of time. You can get a simple removable navi for less then 200. Another way to go is getting a double din, which is very nice, but I dont like looking that far down to see the navi screen. my thoughts.
factory nav is nice because its always there... not at home when you get lost or need directions... coming from someone who has the factory nav and a personal unit
personal nav although they are getting cheaper and cheaper are still an easy target for thieves...
I have no complaints of the factory nav but I dont think it would be worth doing a nav conversion --- for that trouble just buy a double din and be happy with it

Well I did the conversion on my CLS back in Nov. 07' and I love it. I haven't had any problems with it. There's nothing like having that stock look and feel BUT if you aren't going to keep the car that much longer than I would think twice. It's a lot of work. Also I did the install myself and it ran me about $875.00 for all parts and supplies. I read and studied for a long time also to be ready to do the job. Good luck.

What's keeping me back from getting an aftermarket in-dash NAV unit is that I want something that you can remove the face...
Haven't found anything good that fits that criteria.

If i were to get a portable navi, i would use something like the dash mat so it doesnt leave that suction cup circle on the windshield and is easily hidden from sight. I dont go out of town everyday so I would only use the navi once in a while.
Noah, why do you need a in-dash double din navi? you already have a portable one and a single din.

You can actually remove the AVIC's face unit (it's detachable) once it's retracted if I remember correctly.

The upgrades cost as much as a new one.
It's kind of a pain in the ass to bring in and out of the car because I don't want to attract attention so I remove and install the suction-cup mount everytime.
Then the battery is constantly dying so I have plug in the charger and there are cords all over.
Just annoying after a while...so I only bring it on long trips but I love driving with it on all the time.
Just too much hassle for me.
Is that true for all the Avic's? (Made by Pioneer right?)
It seems to me that an aftermarket system is a better idea.
I have a couple requirements, and if someone knows how I could make them work it would be much appreciated.
1. Must work with the stock speaker system
2. Must have an extra A/V input on the back
3. Must have iPhone 3G/iPod integration
4. Steering wheel control = Win.

Many.
I have a current gen, Garmin based NAV with 2009 maps, DVD/CD player, iPod interface, stereo in the stock location.
I kept stock HVAC function plus I still have the OEM nav (although I have never used it since this went in.)
I was used to the Garmin NAV when I got the CL and using the oem NAV was painful.

Seeing that the factory system is using 10 year old technology it's easy to see that it sucks.
