More Transmission Woes

Last night after coming home from the store, my transmission "jumped" during a 2-3 shift. It was pretty severe, as I thought I had ran over something. I drove back just to make sure I didn't run over anything.

It's jumped before but not this severe. I hope this is not the start of a transmission failure. I sometimes have problems when I'm cruising on the freeway on 5th and then step on the gas, during a 5-4-3 downshift, the transimission will also jerk sometimes. I've taken it to the dealer when the problem wasn't as severe, but they couldn't duplicate the problem. They just said during hard acceleration, the shift may seem rougher than normal. I don't know about that. I've driven a lot of automatics, including my old '99 CL and I have never experienced such erratic shifts or a shift that hard, as it jerked me forward.

This is just the latest in a series of frustrations since I bought the car February this year.

1. Faulty controller for the headlights (my lights wouldn't turn off when switched to off).
2. Front tire that had a sidewall bubble only after 1,000 miles! I tried to get this replaced under warranty but the tire manufacturer claimed I ran over a pothole or something...whatever.
3. Squeaky moonroof that was fixed temporarily. Now I hear the sound again sometimes, so I'll have to bring it back again!
4. Rattles in the dash and passenger seat! There are some persistent rattles. I think I've learned to ignore them now.
5. Warped rotors that I had turned yesterday and got new pads. We'll see if they warp again. Probably so, since they just turned them and didn't replace with new ones.
6. And now the transmission.

I hate to admit it, as I really like this car, but this car has given me the most problems in such a short period of time. I've owned the car 7 months, and I've been to the dealer more times than I have with my old CL (i had for 2 years) or my old Honda Civic (owned for 2 years).

When my car was in for the rotor repair yesterday, my co worker commented, "Your car is in the shop again???" I was almost embarrassed to admit all the problems I've had, since before I bought it, I was touting how wonderful the car was and how it was such a great value. Now they probably don't think so.

I've decided that if the transmission fails, and has to get replaced, I'm going to look for another car. Even though most of the work was under warranty, it is unnerving to have to take the car in this much! I've been to the service department too many times!

Exactly! Knowing your service dept. managers by name isn't always a good thing. This is getting very annoying already.

My car lets out a clicking sound in between 1st-2nd, 2nd-3rd, 1st-reverse, reverse-1st. What the hell could it be? The transition, or the engine? It's embarrassing! I intermittantly slip from 2nd to 3rd, is this covered by the dealership

This is exactly what mine did before it took a shit!!!! It is now at the dealer waiting for a new transmission. The dealer said the transmissions are on back order for 1 month!!! I would take it to the dealer and tell them to go ahead and put the order in for one, so when it does go out on you, your new one will be arriving just in time!!! I am looking at the '02 IS300. I just do not want to deal with issues like this on a brand new car!!!

I think if your car is in the dealer for more than 30 days, you can file for a full refund under the CA lemon law. Get your money back and get a new car!

aefitchgirl,

I see you're also in Orange County. What dealership did you take it? The transmissions are on backorder for 1 month??? What did Acura give you as a loaner?

I hope they don't put me into those cheap Integra LS loaners.

I just hate having to think of getting a new car especially just 7 months after I bought this one! There's a lot of things I like about the CL-S, but if the problems become too unbearable, it will have to go. We'll see if the tranny goes to shit. I wouldn't even know what other car to get.

I took my car to Wier Canyon Acura in Anaheim Hills. And yes, they did give me an Integra to drive. I freakin' hate it!!! I called Acura Consumer Affairs today to let them know that I want something equal or better than the car that I am paying for. I told them if there was not a better car waiting for me at the Acura dealer tonight, the next call will be to my lawyer. I'm waitng for a call back!!!

Same here, I love the car, but these little things make the whole ownership experience a pain in the ass. No matter how nice my dealer is, I'd rather not have to make the 45 minute drive for these things every couple thousand miles...tranny problems, warped rotors, rattles, etc. I also don't really like any other car out there in the CL's price range, but if I have to get rid of it that soon, I'd probably get a 2002 IS300. Even with the ugly rear lights, not as nice interior, and slower 0-60 times, at least my tranny will hold, maybe even with a supercharger. But hopefully I'll be able to hold out until all these new cars come out for 2003.

Let us know what they say. Acura should put you in an equivalent (or better) car. Most of us make payments, so that's one month's worth of payment that you're not going to be in the CL. And to put you in an Integra is unacceptable.
