How much does your license plate cost???

Just renewed my plate today. It's a royal screwjob in Indiana. My CL-S plate cost me $325.00 for the year. Fortunately, the Indiana lottery cuts the cost in half. Otherwise, it'd be a whooping $650.00. And it gets MUCH worse with the class (cost) of the car. Some of the more expensive cars, Mercedes, BMW, etc. can cost upwards of $1200.00 for the DAMN PLATE!!!

So... Let's hear it. Do I have it bad, or do some of you take it in the ass worse that I do???

Even if that's a personalized plate, that's a royal screw job. In MA, regular plates are $35 every two years ($30 if renew by mail or Internet). Vanity plates are $80 a year.

Yeah, I thought Indiana has it rough when it comes to license plates.

The $325 is for the PLATE. I got a Purdue University plate on my car, so add another $15 to that. If I wanted a personalized plate, it's an extra $45.

So, in reality I paid $340... My wife's '01 Alero was $247.00 + $15 for the Purdue plate.

The plates get cheaper as the car ages. Before my CL I had a '91 Accord EX, and the last year I paid $37.00. That was in 2001.

It's unbelieveable...

Hmmm... I'm in calf too and that seems like that is the plate only, what about car registration. Don't forget too that this year and last we were under the Reduced price, but not for long... Mine wold have been near $500 without the VLF savings.

does that include insurance or somethin'??? WTF, that is outrageous. In NYS, I have a custom plate w/ a National Ski Patrol Logo that costs $103 initially, then 2 years later, it's $50/bi-annually. In Indiana I guess it's BOHICA (Bend Over Here It Comes Again).

Insurance... I wish!!!

The $340 includes -

$315 for the plate
$10 Registration fee
$15 foe the Purdue plate

My Dad is thinking about getting either a BMW 530 or 540 late this year or next year. He called regarding plate cost, and they'll be over $600/per year.

And again... Before Indiana brought in the state lottery, the plates cost DOUBLE.

Registration is MA is a very good deal. Of course, seeing that we pay excise tax(which for the past two years has been $455 per year for me), sales tax, exorbitant insurance, income tax and drive on some of the worst roads in the country, it damn well should be!!

We get screwed, pianoman!!!

Excise tax blows. Especially because it changes each year. Here's how MA tucks it to us:

The rate is $25.00 on the thousand. This is the standard rate for the entire Commonwealth.

Vehicles are valued based on valuation rates set by the state, vehicles are valued as follows:

90% of manufacturer's list price when new (1st year)
60% of mfr.'s list price (2nd year)
40% of mfr.'s list price (3rd year)
25% of mfr.'s list price (4th year)
10% of mfr.'s list price (5th + subsequent year)

If you buy a 2003 car in 2002, the vehicle is valued at 50% for 2002, and the valuation then follows the above-stated rates, starting with 90% for the 1st year (2003).

Because I bought my 2002 in 2001, I paid $25 per thousand for 50% of the sticker last year. But then this year I get nailed for $25 per thousand for 90% of the sticker. Around $750 beans.

It sounds like they're including a car tax but just incorporate it into the cost of the plate. My yearly car tax is like $400 in New Haven, CT and registration is $75 every 2 years. As the value of the car decreases, so does the tax. From town to town it differs as well.
