I only felt it once in a rain... I am wondering if my HLSD is not functioning anymore..

jack you car up and spin the front tires. If both wheel spin in the same direction, then it's working.

turngin or straight line.. does not matter, but I think it does not kick in when traveling straight.

only functions when one wheel looses grip. If you are turning and your car doesn't plow, understeer, etc., HLSD is working
It works in straightline accel.....it can actually slow you down.

I never thought of it as something that 'kicks in'. It's there and it works like Zapata said.
The only time I really noticed it was last winter when I was backing out my driveway and the right hand wheel was on some slick ice - I felt it slip and then almost instantaneously the car gripped and continued it's trip down the driveway (actually pretty straight, too).

Just curious... how do you know if your HLSD is malfunctioning?

The HLSD causes the front end to pull in the direction I was turning. Sometimes that's cool, othertimes, it's a little freaky since it yanks the front end around.
It is working otherwise you would probably be hearing it as it is a purely mechanical device.
But to get a feel for it try being in 1st take a corner and get on it. You will feel a shift in the handling where car starts turning in for you; you might also feel the wheel jerk a little.
No, this is not torque steer as it occurs in both directions towards the inside of the direction turning.

but the mechanics of the helical gear limited slip allows for variing degrees of torque transfer to one wheel or the other via a sun gear....but like scalbert said it is a mechanical device and id say you'd hear some bad noises as well as have some very bad drivability if it were malfunctioning
Last winter, I put the right tire in the packed snow and the left tire on the plowed and dry pavement, then goosed the throttle. Car the car kept going straight. Little if any pulling.
HLSD works!

Be sure to have some new CV joints and whatever else is needed to fix the drivetrain after the horrendous wheel hop you receive.
