Elevation Reading on Navi
Elevation Reading on Navi
You know when you press the button or joystick to bring up that screen where it tells you your exact location by address, longitude and latitude? Well it also gives your elevation. I have yet seen mine change off of 0.
Maybe Long Island is flat but I’m just wondering if it even works. Has anyone seen there's go off of 0 ft?

Sure it changes, but it doesn’t go below ZERO.
I used to piss my wife off because on long trips whenever we crested the top of a mountain I would check the elevation.
That fascination wore off in a few months though.

It works just fine. I've seen it state a variety of elevations. I've also verified the GPS location independently once and it was right on.
They claim that the elevation is only accurate within 50 feet. I'll take that.

If your is reading zero, there is a problem.
Elevation using GPS is tricky at best. Read all about it here: http://gpsinformation.net/main/altitude.htm
Every single point on the ground has a known altitude. It would be better if our Navi was using that data instead of calculating using GPS...maybe it is

I've noticed it's a couple hundred feet low through my travels. For instance when passing an elevation sign that says 4000 ft the Navi will read 3800 or so. You will probably have to be 500ft.+ elevation before you get anything but 0. Highest I've seen was at the grand canyon in the 7000's...
I believe a lot of it has to do with how many satellites your car can see at once. You need at least 3 to do lat/long coordinates and 4 to do lat/long/elev. If you go into the navi service menu it shows you how many satellites your car can see at once. If this never goes above 3 where you are, then you won't get elevation data.
