Car Shakes between 50-55 mph
Car Shakes between 50-55 mph
My car drives smoothly except for when I'm between 50 and 55 mph. Its a pretty noticable shaking of the car (you can feel it in the pedals and see the steering wheel shake). Passengers notice it too. I have the tires rotated and balanced, and the alignment has also been done in the last 2 weeks. Yet I still have the shaking. Any idea what could be the problem? I have done plenty of WOT's in my day, as well as some E-Braking. Could that be the reason? Thanks.

Check the previously mentioned things but if you've been doing some serious e-braking then you may have some flat spots in the tires. I had worn some flat spots in the back tires having some parking lot fun and I never noticed I wore flat spots in the tires due to the stiff suspension on my Accord. But, when I gave the rims/tires to my cousing for a stock suspension those things thumped as they turned around. Just something to check...
P.S. Video of some parking lot fun in my old Accord...

Dunno if this is exactly the same as with you guys, but when I get up to 50-65 m.p.h., the car is smooth. It's only under light braking (or heavy also) that the whole car shakes. The steering wheel shakes the most. What's wrong with our cars?? seems like a common problem...
haha i have that same problem when i brake. my brake pads had 20% of their life left on them, yet the rotors were warped. i have new pads now, but the same rotors. thats what i get for being a college kid that can't afford the maintenance on his car.
According to what i read in the 'similar threads' thing at the bottome of the screen, i think i narrowed it down to CV Joints and motor mounts. i'm gonna guess its the CV joints bc every once in a blue moon my car will squeal like a stuck pig when i'm in a parking lot making slow turns. the dealer said they will replace both of them for $350 if I understood her right.
Ok, I was wrong. My front two rims are both bent. So that is the cause of the awful shaking. Discount Tire Company (my tire people) say they can order 2 factory rims just like mine from their warehouse for $100 each. So basically that will come out to $240ish after shipping. Seems too good to be true.
I'm not sure really. I do know I have to get new tires now because they wore down in a weird way bc of the bent rims. But I'm happy bc at least now I know nothing serious is wrong with my car.
How is your diag goin now? I was doin a search on here for other shit, found your post and thought I could drop some knowledge.
I had what I think is the same problem only mine started at about 40mph and stoped at about 55. I took the bitch to 2 acura dealers after I took it to my mechanic who coouldn't find what was wrong and they just dicked with me and charged $125 to do so.
I then, recently, took it to a Honda dealer. I explained them what was up and they found that my right side drive assembly was the problem BUT, only under load. When it was on the lift it looked fine. They replaced my right side drive assembly and $900 later, I have my baby back. Rides smoth as silk now. Cost a lot but, the dope ass feeling of driving a working Type S is worth it.
P.S. I also thought it was motor mounts so I replaced each one myself at a reasonable cost but, it didn't fix the problem. Oh well, needed to be done anyway.

For me..it was my cv axles 45-60 or under heavy load....rim vibrations usually occur at about 80mph....bent rim...they should have seen it when they mounted your tires and couldnt balance it.
a bent rim can be very minor and over looked by the tire installer. And balancing a tire in the air can hide the flat spot on the rim very well when balanced. I had the same issue, had my tires balanced three times with no change, was not until a had a rims refinished that the flat spot showed up. Once that was corrected car rode nice and smooth. I'm not saying you have a bent rim but just keep it in mind if all else fails.

BUT... my rim was still bent and moved to the back of my car after the drive shaft assembly was replaced and I couldn't even feel it. It has been replaced since.
My guess is you have a combo of problems like I did but, hopefully you find a cheaper fix than I did.
I think I'm gonna buy 4 new rims and 3 new tires (one tire was already replaced 2 weeks ago). I am thinking about getting 18" on the back and 17" on the front? I tried to search the forums to see if someone else has tried it, but I came up empty. If I can't find any pictures of such a thing, I'll prolly just get 4 17" rims.
I just bought a 01 CLS and I had that same problem. When I took it back to the dealer they found out that 3 of the wheels were bent. Don't ask me how that happens, but since I just bought the car they decided to replace all the wheels for me. This is probably the problem.
I've had the car since 03, so I'm sure I'm responsible for the damage. I got a flat 2 nights ago too, so I'm driving on a spare for the next few days. No reason to put a new tire on a bent rim. I'm going to replace everything sometime in the next week. I'm excited. I'm going to get some basic 17" rims, nothing flashy.
