Bottle Heater & Purge Installed...Going to the track tomorrow!!

I finally got my Zex bottle heater & nitrous purge kit installed last weekend. The car feels much stronger now with the bottle pressure at 1200 psi (thanks to the heater). In comparison, when I ran a 13.5 my bottle pressure was at about 875 psi. In addition, the purge gives the car an instant burst of power at WOT rather than before when I had a slight delay.

I am going to the track tomorrow to test my butt dyno & the hopes of re-claiming my title of quickest auto (traction permitting) CL-S.

As most of you might know, mattg took that away from me last week with his 13.29 @ 105 mph. I love a little friendly competition.

Wish me luck guys.

Darrin, I do not have a blow down tube. I could get one, but I just never got around to it.

BTW: It wouldn't be a challenge if it was easy.

I know, I will get one soon. So far I have not had any problems

I am going to wait to see what I run before the UR pulley. I ran the car tonight on nitrous for the first time since the heater & purge install & it felt really, really strong. I recommend the bottle heater to anyone using nitrous.

Mattg & myself both have the dry & we are very happy. Nitrous (wet or dry) will void your warranty. It is a decision you have to make on your own.

Good luck with your run(s)!

The only thing that I don't like about bottle heaters is that if the ambient outside temp reaches a certain temp, the bottle warmer won't even come on. It's almost better to have a cold day/night, that way the bottle heater will warm up the bottle much better.

I am so pissed

The track officials would not let me run because I did not have a blow down tube on my bottle. I have run at this track many times before & they never told me I needed one. I thought that I only needed one if I have a hatchback, so I never got one. Now all of a sudden they want to start enforcing this rule they say has always been in the NHRA safety handbook. I even tried speaking to a manager & told him that I have run at the track before with the same exact setup, but he did not care.

Oh well, I will get the stupid blow down tube installed & go back another time. Sorry to disappoint you guys, but imagine how disappointed I am.

The ZEX™ Safety Blow Down Kit ensures maximum safety for your nitrous powered hot rod. If your bottle is ever over-filled or over-heated and the pressure safety disk bursts, the dangerous over-pressure will safely vent to the outside of the vehicle. All racetracks require these blow down kits and they are a must for the serious competitor. The ZEX™ Safety Blow Down Kit is a complete kit that makes installing this important safety item a simple task.

Sucks. How did they know? The times I went all they did was ask me if I ran a 13.9 or lower & if I did I needed a helmet. They didn't ask me to pop the trunk or anything.

I was kicked out of Capital Raceway because I didn't have a blow down tube. So, I stopped going there!

Is it true that you need to drain your bottle before installling the blow down tube?

That sucks, I didn't get a cool official like you did Matt. The weird thing is that in the past, they always ask me to pop my hood & trunk, but they never told me I couldn't run. I think something must have happened, or someone got hurt and now they are being more strict.

thats weird, i guess when i take my car to the track they think its a 19 sec. car and it has no mods, so they dont even tell me to pop my hood

Unfortunately for me the next closest track is Speed World in Orlando (3 1/2 hours away). So I can't stop going to Moroso.

Yes you have to drain the bottle. I was going to have it installed at the track, but the guy at the tent told me I had to drain the bottle to do it.

$30 for the nitrous refill (before I went to the track)
$25 for the blow down tube
$20 for the valve adapter
$20 for installation
$30 to refill the bottle

$125 = I don't think so

OR

$0 to use the bottle until it is empty
$20 for the blow don tube at my local shop
$20 for the valve adapter at my local shop
$0 to install it myself
$30 to refill the bottle

I forgot to tell you guys, I am getting some weird behavior from my car.

Last night I was racing my friend (Stock Dodge '04 SRT-4, ran a 14.0 @99mph).

...2nd gear roll, I accidentally hit the rev limiter (immediately let off the throttle), the car was stuck in 2nd (SS) & the check engine light started blinking.

So I'm like holy something's wrong. I take it out of SS & put it in D5, but the car was still stuck in 2nd. 30 seconds after I put it in D5, the check engine light stops blinking & the car begins to shift normally (like nothing ever happened).

Now I am confused. So I decide to try WOT (no nitrous) to see if the tranny acts up. Everything is fine (shifts are firm, no check engine light).

Then I decide to try again from a 2nd gear roll (with nitrous). Now I am listening for any detonation and feeling for any tranny slippage. No detonation, firm tranny shifts through 2nd & 3rd, I shift into 4th (nice and firm), check engine light starts blinking again (I immediately let off the throttle). What the @$#% is going on? 30 seconds later the check engine light stops blinking & all is normal.

I decide to just drive normally the rest of the way. I pull onto the highway (FL Turnpike) and give medium to slightly aggressive throttle (everything feels and functions completely normal).

I am cruising at about 80 mph in D5 and all is well. After 20 miles of driving normal (minding my own business), a 350Z convertible pulls up next to me & starts taunting me. Temptation was too strong & I decided to put this guy in his place. We approached a toll plaza & we are both in the SunPass lane (350Z in front, me in the back). I am in 2nd gear 4000 rpm we both roll through the toll lane (electronic payment). We both jump on the throttle & by the end of second I am in front of him. I shift into 3rd & start pulling on him...

Then, the check engine light comes on along with the VSA light (not the triangle, but the actual letters V S A come on directly below the check engine light). I let off & the 350Z obviously flies by & thinks that he beat me, but that's not important because I am too busy worrying about my car. I drove the rest of the way home (50 miles) with both the check engine and VSA lights on, but the car feels & shifts perfectly normal. I get home, disconnect the battery for 10 minutes and both lights are off again. I take the car for a ride around the block & everything feels, looks & functions fine.

Today I drive to work, ran the car in 2nd & 3rd on nitrous & everything is fine. No check engine light. YEAH!!!

Tonight I tried it again with nitrous in 1st & 2nd and both the check engine & VSA light come on and stay on AGAIN. I disconnect the battery for 10 minutes and both lights are off again. I take the car for a ride around the block & everything feels, looks & functions fine.

I have no idea what the hell is going on with the car, but I am going to bring it to my friend at the Acura dealer so he can check the error code. Hopefully there is nothing major is wrong with my car.
