01'CLS Vs. G35 coupe 6speed

i have 01' auto cls
intake header exhaust
tranny cooler in trunk(should have put it on today)

he was G35 coupe 6-speed
k&N filter

85 degrees, probably shouldn't have been racing anyhow...

raced a few times. best race was from 25 to 115. he put a headlight on me right at 115 and then we shut down. i know he would keep pulling cause of gearing but it wasn't too bad in my mind, i thought i would have gotten beat much worse.

up to 115? AT CLS are dogs after 100 and i am suprised that he didnt pull away from u after 100mph because G35 6speed are quick all the way up to 130.

good run.

then why did you say they were dogs after 100?

3rd gear pulls hard all the way to redline, which is around 110.

it is a dog after it shifts into 4th though.

But didn't you go from a CL-S 5AT to a G35C 6MT... Big difference when gearing is applied.

Oh, I agree...

But Darrin stated that the CLS has the advantage at a 25mph roll.

I was just stating my own experiences...

scrib, from a 25 roll u are in second gear right???

a a/t cl-s would be in first, giving it the advantage from a 25 roll cause it will catch the begining of vtec right away

No... The G can get up to 35mph in first gear. 60mph in 2nd. And around 85mph in 3rd.

Well since we are talking about gearing...
My RX7 did 1st 35, 2nd 65, 3rd 95, 4th 140 (YEAH BABY!!), 5th i only went up to 160 before i ran out of road.

Plus RX7's don't have a rev limiter, they have a "shift now" suggestion beep. You could ignore it and keep going for a lil more.

Thats nearly identical to the gearing in the CL-S6 Darrin

CL-S6 with OE tire sizes

1st- 40mph
2nd- 64mph
3rd- 93mph
4th- 127mph
5th- 162mph (yeah right)
6th- 206mph (bwahahaha)

Those are assuming 6900 redline, 215/50/17 tires, and 3.286 final drive ratio (6 speed).

Its such a pity that you have to upshift at 93mph. I'm sure they dont care about 1/4 gearing though. I wish they made 4th a little shorter so at least it didnt have such a dramatic falloff compared to 3rd, or make third a touch taller so we didnt have to upshift 100' before the traps.

I feel sorry for you 5AT guys though, your 4th gear is barely shorter than 6th gear in the CL-S6.

In addition, that would mean that the CL-S6 has shorter gearing since it can hang on to a gear for about 400 - 500 more revs and still shift at about the same speeds.

Very good point, I hadnt considered the extra rpms the J32 carries.

Lets just say that for arguments sake though that since the VQ35 holds a significant low end tq advantage that it cancels out the extra rpms that the J32 has.

Here's the overall ratio's for each car.

CL-S6 ------ G35C 6 speed

1. 12.923 ----- 13.423
2. 8.142 ----- 8.222
3. 5.586 ------ 5.745
4. 4.107 ------ 4.496
5. 3.207 ------ 3.538
6. 2.533 ------ 2.809

As you can see it has a slighty shorter gearing and a lower redline, thus it has a lower top speed in each gear relative to the CL-S6. It has better gearing for 1/4 mile racing because 4th is a little steeper and it finishes at the traps at 5700 (900 rpm before redline) whereas the CL-S6 finishes in 4th at 5300 rpm (1600 rpm before redline).

If the CL-S6 had identical gearing to the G35 it would probably be just as fast and actually trap higher and there wouldnt be the average 3 tenths difference between the G35C 6 speed & CL-S6.

JMO, dont take it for fact, especially if you dont know wtf I'm talking about.

joe, where do your revs fall back to on redline 1/2, 2/3 and 3/4 shifts??

maybe the cl-s6 is geared so when ya shift it falls right back to the beginning of vtec

It does, normally drop at or just above 5k revs when shifting at 7k revs.
