Rusted paint....

Hey guys..been a while since I've posted in here. Anyways...about 2 months ago a woman backed up into the side panel of my car (not deep, @ a very slow mph )...i was in the car and checked the damage which at the time seemed like nothing so i decided to just brush it off.

Just today i was looking at the area and i noticed some of the paint is starting to chip and rust has begun to form. My question:

How serious is the rust? Will it spread to the rest of the paint if i dont fix it soon? I noticed that the immediate area seems to have developed some rust , so i applied some touch up paint.

My car needs to get into the shop for some dent fixings (from hit-and-run incidents). Is fixing the rust issue a complicated procedure?

Rust spreads...so take care of it as soon as you can. You might not see it on the top, but it might rust on the inside. You should clean off the rust and then apply touch-up paint. It shouldn't be a complicated procedure unless it has eaten through...in that case, a piece of metal might need to be welded in

In order to take care of the rust, you need to sand it down to bare metal. Paint the area with a good primer and then regular paint and then a clear coat. I'd get it done at a good paint shop.

You live up where it snows so I would get it taken care of before the first snowfall of the year.

I heard that if you take a dc power supply and connect one lead to the rusted area and connect the other end to the frame that it will take the rust away.

You can't simply zap electricity through something and make the rust go away. Rust is not a good conductor of electricity, so the electricity will just go around it. You would need to dip the metal piece into a solution, and then run electricity through that after adding some other parts (http://www3.telus.net/public/aschoep...lyticrust.html). I doubt the OP would be interested in dipping his whole side panel into a solution to use the electricity method
