Loud Sound When Accelerating

I have a '06 auto with 8000 miles. I bought it brand new. Lately when im accelerating occasionally i hear a loud noise sounds like possibly the intake or muffler. i sound like i have aftermarket exhaust but not in a good way. the noise incrreases as i give it more gas. the noise seems just to come and go. any ideas what it could be before it take her in?

Sounds like some kind of hole in the exhaust system which could be due to a multitude of things(impact, rust etc) or one of the header/exhaust connectors coming loose due to a bolt falling out or something.

When you say the noise comes and goes do you mean it's present at only certain rpms(which would indicate a resonance) or during different parts of your drive?

Did you recently have your car serviced, or do you do your own maintenance?

One of my friends had a similar problem -- turned out that Jiffy Lube didn't tighten her air filter box.

How does the car feel when you give it gas if its laggy feeling it might be the airbox. Alot of people remove the resonator and that causes a gap sometimes in power.

I use to go to Jiffy lube places until they started raising prices pass $35.

A few years back, my daughter took her car to jiffy lube and they forgot to put oil in the car. They were training a new grease monkey and the trainer didn't double check his work. My daughter (18 at the time) didn't notice the oil light and drove the car for almost 20 miles before it died on her. Jiffy lube replaced the engine and gave me a rental car for 2 weeks (she used my car; Avis couldn't rent a car to her because of her age). It cost them $7200 for engine replacement and car rental fees.

no the sound is more of a deep noise. almost like im running with a hole in my muffler, but sounds like its coming from the engine, not exhaust region. i checked and with the best of my knowledge theres no holes in the exhaust.

was going to post the same problem. got mine after they changed the air filter for the engine at a mom and pop shop. checked airbox and everything was tight. no decreaes in power just a real deep growl (not a good one) at 3000 rpm.

have not taken it to dealer cause they might say it was the car shops fault and charge me. might just fix it by getting a CAI

sounds identical to my problem. new air filter, but im missing one of the screws to the airbox, so i only have three, im thinking that might be the reason due to a loose airbox. any ideas where i could buy a screw from?

i'm sure you could buy the screws at the dealer but i doubt missing 1 missing screw out of 4 would cause this noise. but i'm no mechanic so don't hold me to that.

guess i will just check my airbox again to look for leaks and whatnot. keep us posted if you do go to dealer and find the actual problem.

Hmmm...it's possible that is the culprit. On my friend's car, they stripped the threads on the airbox so she couldn't put a screw in.

I think if there is a sufficient gap in the housing, air could be slipping in through the gap.

You could just zip tie it for now and see if that fixes things?

boxman586, did you also open your airbox to make sure the filter is seated correctly? I bet if it weren't seated correctly that would cause the noise as well.

the missing screw will definitely cause a bit of a growl or even a resonance of the box.

If they used a low quality filter which is restricting flow that may cause a bit more growl as well as the engine is working harder to suck in air.
