Help, stain problems! Don't use GOOF-OFF or ACETONE!!

I've got this weird maroon colored stain on my seat. I read on this site that you could use Goof-Off or acetone to remove stains from the seat.

DO NOT EVER DO THIS!

That stuff is like an acid and it eats away the leather. It removes the stain, but it also removes the leather itself. I have a spot on my seat now that is all eaten away by the Goof-Off. It looks like sh*t!

Here are a few pics of the stain. I think it may be dye that rubbed off a shirt I was wearing, since I have a couple shirts that are the same color. Anyone know how I can get rid of this stain?

Yeah it does. 1500 miles on this thing too. I've messed it up enough, I'm taking it to a detailer this weekend. Maybe if the stain can't be removed, there's some kind of cover-up paint. Who would have thought a SHIRT could do that kind of damage? And I guess it's my fault for not trying that Goof-off somewhere unobtrusive. Even says to do that on the bottle.

That's good thinking, but all my belts are brown or black. You may be right though.

Yep I have a similar. lighter stain in same general area. I think its my belt. I have quartz tho, and not as noticeable. A very dilute Murphy's Oil Soap helped a bit, followed by conditioning.

I can't see it except pretty close up.

My wife has the PWP/Parch and she wears jeans alot and she had some blue rub off. I used some Honda Glass Cleaner(in the PISSSSSS can). And it came right out. I tried it on a small spot first and then the rest. I dont know..but that sucks big time. My wife said "isnt "goof-off for glue and stuff" I dont know Ive never heard of the stuff.

Someone was talking about an ink stain from a pen on their seat, and someone else recommended Goof-Off. It's a paint and glue remover, like for wiping up dried paint splatters. I just wanted to warn people that it's a bad idea to use it on their seats.

Goo Gone (Note the "Gone") would probably work. Goof Off seems to be more violent. Goo Gone is more like an oil (I think it's mostly orange oil--Goof Off has a more alcohol-ey smell)--and it does a better job removing glues and stuff. But still....you have to try it on an inconspicuous area.

About the stain....I'm not hugely surprised about dyes leeching off shirts. If the shirt is new-ish, and you were sweating quite a bit, that'd do it--I mean, they're both fabrics.

I guess that's where air-conditioned seats would come in handy, eh?

I am so sorry that happened to your seat. I was the one that suggested Goof-off. I have used it at home on my leather funriture to remove ink & marker lines with no adverse affect. I can say my leather quality at home is much better than in my TSX - That may be why the bad reaction. When we bought our Prelude in '99 we had aftermarket leater seats (Classic Soft Touch) added and they gave us a spray cleaner to use on them. If you give me your address I will gladly mail to you what I have left. Once again I am sorry that happened with my suggestion.

No worries, you were just trying to help. I blame myself for not testing it somewhere inconspicuous first. Maybe you can delete that post, so nobody else tries it.

I'm taking it into the dealer today to have them look at it. They have some top notch people there who I'm sure can fix it up, or else they can send me to a detailer who will. I'll post the 'after' pics in this thread.

Damn that sucks. Sorry to hear that it happened. Thanks for letting the rest of us know not to use this stuff on our seats. Good luck with your visit to the dealer.

Well, I paid $70 for a guy to come out and re-dye the seat. He even fixed the leather grain of the area the Goof-Off destroyed. Here are the before and after pics:

Now at least I know to never wear that belt again. An expensive fashion lesson.

If anyone in the Phoenix area needs this kind of work done, the guy's name is Rafael and the number is 602-695-5902. He comes to your work or house.

Are the side bolsters leather or vinyl? I can't quite tell. One wouldn't think vinyl would a) stain or b) be repaired very easily (dyed) if it did.

I might have answered my own question there.

It was recommended in another 'Help, My Seats Are Stained' thread, and I had already tried everything else.

i had a pretty bad stain from a pen on the leather (elbow rest?) on the passengers door a few months back. i tried just a gentle soap and soft cloth, but it didnt come off. So i used isopropanol alcohol which removed the stain, and then put a generous amount of meguiars gold class leather conditioner over where the spot was because alcohol dries everything out. i put leather conditioner over the same spot a few days in a row, and everything turned out ok. no spot, and the leather looks new. i probably woudnt recommend this solution because alcohol isnt leather friendly, but it worked for me, might be a last resort

Go to a large shoe repair shop and buy a can (4 oz.) of AFTA.

It is made by the same company that makes Goof-Off but is for carpet and fabrics ('S' coded fabrics -- whatever that means). The shoe shops uses it for leather, as well. And, I have used it on many items; including shoes, fabrics, and plastics without any harm.

But, first test it on a small, out-of-sight, area. Give it a about a week before coming to the conclusion that it is save to use on any of the interior materials in the TSX.

Any Way to Protect the leather seats FIRST?

I'll be buying my TSX soon, I HOPE, and have a child... he's 13 and not real messy, but still a boy... is there any good leather protectants out there so that I could protect my leather BEFORE I'm the one posting for stain cleaners?

Dont know if this was a brand new shirt, but you should always wash new clothes before you wear them for many reasons like this... the dye will rub off easily.
I am sorry to see that, it looks..... hope you fix it!

p.s.- I cant believe you even thought about using acetone on your leather seats?! WTF were you thinking!? lol......
