Angry Bailing on the Short Throw Shifter Install

So just made my first attempt at the Short Throw Shifter...

When I went to pry up the center console... the trim around the shifter broke and the center panel wouldn't even budge... had to "crazy glue" the trim back together... I know everyone has said you just gotta pull it off but not gonna try now that something actually broke!

I had the instructions from both Neuspeed and Comptech and the first parts the same in both.

Maybe this is "sour grapes" but it's probably not worth it for me... I don't go to autocrosses, or race the car. I also don't shift all that aggresively. I purchased it cause it was a relatively inexpensive mod.

I'm really upset about the trim!!! :angryfire

When I did it man, while I was doing it, I thought it was like the worst idea I had ever had. Seemed like everthing that could possibly go wrong did. I snapped the trim piece off that you are probably referring to. All the while I'm thinking about how they say it's like a 1-2 hour job. Oh man I thought it sucked. But once you get the console off, and the plastic ball off the bottom of the shifter, it's not that bad, and once you get it all back together and functional, it's so much better. So you endure a day of annoying crap for much better feeling shifts for the life of the car. Keep at it man.

You gotta try to do one side at a time. It helps to have a long set of pliers to slide underneath the panel where the e-brake goes up. This will help you pop off one of the sides.

Sorry about your centre console!!! Maybe you should pay someone to do it? Like scheißterhöffer said, once you get it in you won't regret it.

Any of you have pictures of the short shifter installed? Are you reffering to the part that shortens your throws by 30% or the actual short shifter?

Also while I am at it, have any of you changed your shift knob? I like the knob, but I think the old S2000's knob (without the leather) looks cooler. I'm debating whether to buy a type-R shift knob for my Accord from modacar.com, but I'm not sure if the quality is the greatest. Anyway, I'm rambling now...

Axygos,

You've already broken the trim piece. Why not just go ahead and finish the install.

Don't worry. Most of us who have worked on our cars have broken trim pieces and stuff. It's really no big deal. Complete the install and you will be proud of your accomplishment.

The damage is already done. Don't let it discourage you.

Have you looked into how much it will cost to get a replacement trim piece?
Also, maybe you can just get a part from one of those aftermarket dash kits to help cover the break.

Yeah! Mine broke too No Biggie glue it back on.
Its a bitch to get up the console. & theres no way in hell your gonna get that thing up with out breaking that piece. I figured it happened to everybody. All that happened was that it popped off. there is no visible damage once you glue it back on you have another road block getting that metal piece off the cable. Wooh!! Wholly Sht what a pain in the ass!!!

Angry Okay this time is final!

Guys, thanks for the encouragement and tips on the install. I took everyone's advice and made another effort at the install. Here's what happened...

I got the console off easily by pulling on one side of the shifter. The seat heaters and acc power wires came off without problems. Got the armrest off next. Disconnected the shifter cables also without any problem. Took a long time to get the damn bushing off on the ball of the stock shifter... but I was expecting it so I kept at it until it worked... When I went to put the comptech shift attachement thing... it wouldn't go in all the way... I tried for like 1.5 hours and couldn't get it to go in... It was also begining to snow and get colder here in Cleveland... tried a bit more... just wouldn't go... I was getting frustrated and slicing up my fingers on the shift housing by pushing and turning the damn thing. Sadly I had to give up... however I did install the metal bushings since I was there... don't really feel that much of a difference yet...

The STS is just not in my future... anyone want one for free... I have most of the stuff... PM me... First come first serve!

man if you're from NOVA save it for a mod meet and I'd be happy to install it for you. a little late now however. the most important part of removing the center console is not bending it... I'm assuming you cracked it in the middle?

you may just need to loosen the screws in the side to slide it on. metal bushings without the short shifter is
