Is there something wrong with the M Mode on my car?

Today, I was playing around with M Mode on my 2008 TSX. &I know that if you leave the car in gear the car will automatically go back to gear 1. So lets say if you're on gear 4 it will go to gear 1 if you go to a full stop. I know that.

My question: Today I was rolling down my block on gear 2 (Shifted to gear 2 at 2K rpm from gear 1). Then I did a full stop at a stop sign, and it didn't go back to gear 1. It stayed at gear 2. Is there something wrong with my car? Or is it suppose to be like that?

Oh also. I came to the stop in gear 2 with the RPM at around 2~3K.

Service Manual

"M position Sequential sportshift mode: Manual gear shift driving; vehciles can start off in 1st or 2nd gears, and does not upshift automatically. The lock-up mechanism operates in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears."

While that doesn't verify the automatic reset to 1st at a stop (I didn't read the auto portion of the owners manual), it does likely explain why it would shift down from 2nd.

Oh I know about that. I needa know why it didn't shift back to gear 1 when I went to complete stop when I was at gear 2? I was cruising on gear 2, and at about 2~3K RPM. Full stop at a stop sign, and it didn't go to gear 1. Anymore replies? I need to know if anything is wrong =(. Thanks in advance for people that answer.

Relax, nothing is wrong. It is to give you the option of starting from a standstill with lower torque. It is useful when the pavement is slick.

My 06 5AT downshifts to 1st gear in SS mode at a stop no matter if I'm in 2nd - 5th. The only time I've notice it does not downshift is when I'm in 2nd and I do a California stop.

Maybe the programming is different for the 08 5AT compared to the 06 5AT?

Hopefully someone with a 08 5AT can give it a try and see if they get the same results as you. If not, I would have it checked out on your next service with Acura.

2008 User Manual

Page 256. Although it is a little unclear in the original post: if the vehicle was placed in second and then driven it would stay in second even when brought to a stop.

If this issue doesn't repeat itself there probably isn't an issue. But feel free to bring it in and ask about it. I am sure that the acura technicians will be more than happy to take a look at your car.

My car is an 08 and doesn't do it. Mskierki posted a good point though in regards to if you started in 2nd from a stop vs 1st. You can always downshift to 1st next time and then go about the way you drive and see next time you come to a complete stop if it goes into first. If so, then that will be what's happening. If it stops in 2nd again then I'd look into having it checked out since mine def goes back down to 1st unless I start from a dead stop in 2nd.

I kinda came across thinking there's a problem, because I was really playing around with the M Mode. Before I noticed it only dropped to gear 2 instead one. I was driving home 3K RPM - gear 1, then gear 2 I cruised a little bit, and then I just floored it, then stop sign. Then I did that again. I think I did it 2-3. Like cruising on gear 2 @ about 2K rpm and then just flooring it after wards. I think its bad for the tranny, but I don't know that affects the problem with going down to gear 2. What do you guys think?

SideNote: It doesn't always go to gear 2. Only sometimes. And I thought about that day more. I didn't shift at 2-3K MY MISTAKE =(. I think it was 2K tops. And shifted to gear to when I rolled off the stop sign. Basically saying, I shifted into gear 2 after I released my foot off the brake, no gassing yet. Do you guys think its because the computer still thought I was at a stop because I only rolled off the stop sign and shifted real quick after wards?

No, there is nothing wrong with your car. That's perfectly normal.

I would venture to also say that it's perfectly normal, as my 2nd gen exhibits the same behavior.

I'm starting to think its because I shift too early. The other day I played around with it again to see what happens. Here's what I got:

~At stop sign, and I gas, RPM doesn't go 2K yet. Probably about 1-1.5K I shift to gear 2. If I do that and stop it reduces to gear 2.

~At stop sign, and I gas, RPM doesn't go 2K yet. Probably about 1-1.5K I shift to gear 2, but if I were to do shift to gear 3, and stop it will drop to gear 1.

~At stop sign, and I gas, I shift to gear 2 at about 2-3K rpm. And go to a stop. It goes to gear 1.

That's what I came up with from playing with it. I'm just been wondering why does it go to gear 2 even though I shifted with movement? Was it because I shifted at really low RPMs? At the manual it said, if you shift to gear 2 at a dead stop then it will be fixed and only go to gear 2. What I'm thinking is the computer couldn't realize the dead stop vs the really slow movement of the car. I wasn't even at 5MPH yet. I assume.

Oops! It wasn't really 1-1.5K RPM. I think it was just 1K RPM. I just remember I barely gassed when I let off the brake.
