splash guards

hello all,

i am picking up my new 6-speed TSX tomorrow afternoon (yeah!) and i would like to have splash guards put on the car. i can get them off the internet for $70 or so but i asked the dealer about them and he told me that they are difficult to install and it would be necessary to take the wheels off for a proper installation..... and they want to charge me almost $150 to purchase and install them.

has anyone had them put on? if i can use a screwdriver, can i buy them off the internet and install them myself. thanks for the tips.

Where are you located? If I were you, I'd negotiate with the dealer to throw the splash guards in for free.

Yes you install them with a screw driver. You will need to take the wheels off to get the screw driver in there though.

I would also suggest you invest in some 3M clear protective film to cover parts of the paint where the guards attach. This will help prevent the sratches the mud guards will etch into the paint after getting road grime between the guard and the body panels.

If you can use a screwdriver, you can install them yourself. A short phillips helps somewhat as well. As posted above, you full lock the wheels from side to side to access some of the screws.

One more thing, are you ever planning on getting the OEM Underbody Spoiler Kit? If so, don't waste your money getting the splash guards because they'll be useless when you put on the kit. I would of gotten the splash guards, but I knew I was going to put on my OEM Kit right away.

My car came with splash guards, which i took off immediately within a couple days of purchase. They're just sittin in my garage, so I'd gladly sell em to you. Hows $40 sound? They're pretty much brand new. PM me if you're interested.

In fact, my dealer put the splash guards on mine for free without me even asking!!! Now what if I actually didn't want them, was he gonna charge me for removing them?!?

thanks for the info. i am not going to have the dealer install them as i asked them to hook me up (at least drop the install charges) and they said they could not..... nice guys huh?

so... i am going pick up the car today minus splash guards and see how i feel about installing them later on. i have a 2-ton jack at home and taking off the rear wheels and turning a screwdriver does not sounds earth-moving.

thanks again for the assistance.

Good luck with them!

don't make reference to "earth-moving" now... a 8.7er just hit Southeast Asia again couple days ago (sorry, that just caught my attention in that way)

So, back to cars! Maybe you want to shop around other Acura dealership when it comes to services later down the road... your dealer doesn't sound too nice indeed.

You don't have to take any of the wheels off. . . With the fronts you just need to turn the wheels. With the rear, just jack the rear of the car up and you'll have plenty of room as the wheel drops.

Color of your car?

Just wondering what color is your car? I wanted to put spalsh guards on my SSM, but saw them installed on another car of the same color - they looked absolutely horrible. However, I have seen the guards on a darker colored car such as Carbon Gray and they looked pretty decent.

calbear, splash guards on my SSM are horrible looking! just too lazy to remove them over the cold winter. on darker color cars, it matches.

i'll remove when i install the oem body kit.

ssm guards

I bought some splash guards, was lazy and let them sit in my garage for almost a year, and then saw them on a SSM. So this one time, my lazyness paid off....

There was also some discussion awhile back about the spalsh guards scraping through the paint underneath them.

The salesperson offered $75 for splash guards when I bought my white TSX, and I thought it wasn't worth it 'cause they looked bad on a red car, not to mention the white.

Do you need to drill any holes to install mud guards or do you use existing holes? Also, if you use a right-angles screwdriver, do you still need to jack up the car when installing?

I'm still on the fence on whether or not to get them. I don't see me getting them if I had to pay someone to install them. I do not see me ever taking them back off or putting on front or side skirts.

Diy!

Very simple answer: do it yourself! It took me about 30 min's after buying them online. Save the $100, a very simple install

No need to drill anything!!!!! All you need is a screw driver!!!!!! thats all for your case. you don't need to jack up the car or nothing. If you are planning to get the oem kit then don't. It should only take you about 10min max. If you can't do this by yourself then sorry!!! you are one stupid person!!~

Well, as everyone predicted, it was a fairly simple job - about a half hour or so. One thing I found helpful besides a right-angled phillips screwdriver was to put a phillips bit on a small wratchet (use 1/4" socket to hold bit) so I could get the screw in the back guard through the dimple. Otherwise, it went very smoothly. I'm glad I did it - I think they look good against the Carbon Grey.

The thumb tack is used to punch a tiny hole in a plug that one screw goes into for each flap. Each guard uses 3 screws. I did not have to jack up the rear to do the rear guards.
