engine warm up time

What is supposed to be an optimum engine warm up time? I am in Wisconsin and it soooooo cold out here this time of year.

Today morning I was running late for office and decided to drive right away without warming it up. For the first 2 -3 minutes or so, the car felt really sluggish but after a while it was ok.

Is there any performance impact on the long run if I did that too often? How long do you wait before starting to drive your tsx?

The second the engine bumps down the revs, then its warm. You are perfectly fine to run without warming up the car.

Another option, get the engine block heater. You folks get crazy cold weather.

start up car, wait about 30 secs for oil to get distributed. Usually rpm's drop by 100 by then...Put in drive and drive slowly w/o reving past 3000 rpms. I read its better to do it this way than to actually warm up the engine because you get to warm up the transmission at the same time.

This has been discussed before. I'm amazed I only got one hit when searching for "engine warm up". Here it is:

Oh crap. I just wait until the beeping stops, then I go. Sometimes if I'm super duper late, I just hop in the car and go.

Is my car going to blow up?

Beeping? Do you mean seat belt beeping? Looks like you are in kansas and I think it gets really cold out there as well..so it won't be a bad idea to wait for 30 sec or till ur revs lower a little bit..

Once the oil hits the lifters you're set! A few seconds at least.

Let the rpms drop down, perhaps not to 1000rpm but about 300rpm from where it starts at. It happens later when it is very cold outside. There's a happy medium between just starting and going, and leaving it to idle for too long. To short means the oil is thick and flows so poorly that you will have metal to metal contact - you'll see the more than normal volume of shavings in the oil pan if you change your own oil. To long means you built water in the exaust and your exhaust will be so hot it will shorten the life of the catalyic converter and when the idle comes down so low with the oil still not being fully hot that you will run low oil pressure in the valve train.

Below freezing ..2 min
At freezing..1 min
Above freezing...about 30 seconds

I'm no engineer though...just my opinion.

I haven't seen a thread that shows how you can position the steering wheel so low down on your pelvis that you can actually drive hands-free when using your cell phone as is the law here in NY.

I'll reverberate what everyone else said by letting the car drop in RPM's. Mine starts at around 1K RPM at first and once it starts to drop, I put it in gear.

Simple. When the coolant temperature meter reaches just below the halfway point, the engine coolant is officially at operating temperature. You can safely consider the oil fully warmed up (or close to it) a few minutes/miles after that.

The car is designed to be driven at a relaxed or "typical" pace as soon as you start it. But it is highly advisable to wait until the coolant and oil are at operating temperature before you start pegging the rev limiter and going wide-open-throttle.

!don't try this at home, kids!

my father used to drive hands free while eating a sandwich, just drop the steering wheel low enough to be able to hold it steady with your knee, when keeping the knee above the ankle.....so to speak, to get into autopilot mode just move the ankle closer to you and you're set
