well yes... but I can't see mobile phone manufacturers staying with a technology that will not allow a robust pc interface.

Just another reason not to get all the latest and greatest gadgets in a car that will be around for a while. Everyone that paid for the BT option on other cars will be left holding an empty bag.

"but I can't see mobile phone manufacturers staying with a technology that will not allow a robust pc interface" - hmmm. possibly, but i'd have to say i disagree; the PC is an afterthought to leading phone manufacturers (trust me, i know because i work with them). they see the world as a place of mobility, and there are billions more mobile devices than PCs. however, it's inevitable that everyone ends up using the prevailing wireless technology if the benefits outweigh the negatives....

I think this article is a little too harsh on bluetooth. With the amount of devices that have bluetooth right now there will be products supporting it for a long time. Mfgs were slow to adpot bluetooth but now its very very popular with the high end cell phone set.. What makes them think that wireless USB is going to takeoff like a rocket ship?

The Death of Bluetooth

This is why car manufacturers rarely jump head-first into new technologies:

The Death of Bluetooth: Intel Moves to Ultrawideband

Verizon still doesn't have any bluetooth phones and I'm wondering if they ever will.

The FCC just approved a Motorola CDMA BT phone (coming to Verizon):

BT isn't going anywhere. Rumors of it's death have been greatly exaggerated.

here's my other reply

if you take a look at this article

http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle....storyID=4361117

you will see that in 2003 55 MILLION bluetooth devices were sold...doesnt seem like death to me.

and also that article implies that Verizon is considering bluetooth phones finally...

here is a sneak preview for those who dont want to read.

But now, helped by growing industry support, shipments of Bluetooth devices are expected to increase about 60 percent in 2004 to 88 million units from 55 million units sold in 2003, according to Gartner.

i dont think the # of bluetooth devices sold is a good indication of the use/acceptance of it. eg... SE phones have bluetooth..but how many people actually use it?? i think bluetooth is okay for cell phones right now..but definitely too slow for computers and 3G(next gen of phones) applications

All RF-based wireless technology will hit a wall someday--there's only so much spectrum.

excellent point. I would say that between 1-2% of people who have a bluetooth enabled phone actually use that feature.

Again, it's a very myopic, Ameri-centric viewpoint that just because a PC chip manufacturer moves away from a technology that the mobile world will also move. In the mobile space, there's more manufacturers than just Intel. There are BILLIONS of cell phones, millions of PCs. Sure, it's great when devices play well with others, but don't think that Nokia or other top 5 handset OEMs are kept up nights over this.

Intel is very influential, but is not the end-all-be-all. Same with MSFT, for example.

^^^ Yeah, the article said dead from Intel's POV, anyway. And besides, even if the author didn't qualify his statement, it's still just one author's opinion of the consequences of Intel moving its support.

Well said. BT is low-power, low-bandwidth networking intended for mobile devices where power consumption and battery life is an issue. It's not a particularly PC-centric technology. Just because PC's don't use it doesn't make it dead.

I'm quite happy with the Bluetooth connectivity between my phone, laptop, and PC. And it does not interfere with the wifi connections, as so many seem to say is a problem with having both Bluetooth and 802.11b/g. I find it sad that Intel and Bluetooth couldn't work things out, but I highly doubt that Bluetooth is on it's way out.

IMO, who knows if wireless USB is not going to be the next "coming out too late" technology? USB 1.1 was a big hit technology in the time Pentium 166MMX start to come out, but it just get popular in the past 2~3 years. Same a BT, it's getting to become popular. What makes Intel think wireless USB will come out faster than all others?
