#9033 already?
I took delivery on Monday night and noticed the car's number was #9033. I asked the sales guy about it and he thought it was unusual... he checked another TSX that had came in on the same truck as mine... it's number was in the 6 thousands.
Anyone know why the production number is so high already? Why would there be such a large skip between two cars on the same shipment?
Maybe it is what it is.... 9000 down and 6000 to go!

No, they can't be going backwards. Because folks who got their cars very early (in April) have very low VIN numbers. Maybe the 6000 was a dealer trade that had been sitting on a lot for a while? I've had mine for a week (it's #8349), so 9033 sounds about right.
Now that I think about it, these cars must be selling great! We're already well over halfway through production for this year in only 3.5 months. There's still 5.5 months to go in '04, so they should definitely reach their goal of selling 15k TSXes this year. Sweet.

I"m not surprised. My number was just over 2000 and I got it begining of june. Keep in mind I am in Canada where we are getting only 4000. So per capita is seems to be selling even better in Canada.

That's good to know then... I thought that my #9033 was the odd ball... but it's his #6k that is actually out of place.
It's nice having the 'limited edition' model of the car... but it'll be really nice when the go full-bore on production w/ the TSX. Then we'll start to see some serious competition in the TSX toy aftermarket.

Dispelling this myth is officially now my quest. I don't want anyone to get screwed into paying more b/c they believe something that isn't true.

15000 is what is allotted (sp?) for North America.

Do we or anyone know if these number actually increment by 1? I have a feeling that they probably don't because if they were, it might cause some mix up when the VIN numbers are written or relayed from one person to another. Also, I don't think they increment by one, because it would be too easy for people to duplicate and make fake ones for some odd reason that someone might. Just my thoughts, if anyone has the real numbering scheme they use, please let us now.

Maybe I'm no good with calendars, but aren't there 5.5 months left in 2003? I would figure the 2005 model wouldn't come out until at least June of 2004, so that would still leave us 11.5 months and only about 5000 TSX's left of the 15,000. My guess is that they will sell way more than the 15,000 by the time 2005's come out.

At the current sales rate the last of the 15,000 TSX's should be rolling off the assembly line sometime in late Sept. or early Oct.
That'll leave the rest of the world drooling in anticipation for the 2005 TSX for about 6 months! HOLY CRAP!!

The 15,000 is not an allotment!!! It was Acura's sales estimate for the first year of production! Do any of you really believe that they will stop selling them in September because the first year's "allotment" is gone?
Be serious...this is not a limited production vehicle...the only reason the target was so low was so that it would be easily attainable and Honda could say "first year sales exceeded estimates by 84%" etc. Honda will sell as many as possible as fast as possible.
With that said, I don't think exclusivity will be a problem in the short-term. Say they sell 25,000 2004s before the 2005 model comes out. That is still a very low number in the scheme of things.

The salesperson will probably not tell you. Unless it's in writing, sales staff have a license to lie or misinform or act conveniently unknowing.

in regards to limited production
All I can find officially from Acura about TSX production is in one press release here - where they say "Acura projects sales of 15,000 units a year." - so they never said they will stop cold turkey at 15000 cars.
However I think that if they projected 15000 cars to be sold, they may not initially be prepared to build significantly more than that amount of cars. Maybe they'll get to 20,000 cars, who knows? They started building them around March, so far they've had almost 5 months of car building, with 5 months left in the year. Sometimes factories may close for holidays, or may have a scheduled furlough to save labor costs and retool things, so they may not have the full 5 months left for car building. Does anybody actually know their schedule?

If that's really all they've said, then most of us have misinterpreted it in a couple of different ways (even besides the fact that maybe the figure means nothing anyway).
First, that they ever said 15,000 was a limit. I thought they did say it. Not that I ever believed it was a true limit even if they did -- but it looks like maybe they didn't even say it.
Secondly, that to whatever extent there's any significance to it, we've all been wrong about what is the "year" in question. From this quote, it looks like at the moment it would be April to April. I think everyone has been thinking either "calendar year 2003" or "model year 2004" -- both of which would be wrong.

I went out to try and challenge the 15000 "sales figure" statement. What I found was that most publications were reporting it as a sales figure and that others simply misquoted their source by stating only 15000 were going to be produced. I found 1 article that said Canada was going to get 4000 TSXs and US was to get 15000. There is no way to support a claim that acura is only going to make 15000, it was simply a sale projection.

As to the question as to whether Honda can ramp up production of the TSX to cover the difference between projected and actual demand, the answer is almost certainly yes. Modern manufacturing companies (which certainly includes Honda) use sophisticated demand planning and forecasting tools that capture demand trends in real time and help automate factory production levels, part manufacturing, etc. Honda has almost certainly been aware of the increased demand level since April (and probably before then, since they had info on the number of pre-sales), which is plenty of time to begin to increase production. The fact that the TSX shares so many parts with various Accord lines certainly makes this easier as well.

From acuranews.com
"The TSX will go on sale in April, 2003 and be priced between $25,000 and $30,000. Acura projects sales of 15,000 units a year."
From hondanews.com
"Strong demand for the all-new 2004 TSX sports sedan pushed sales to 2,275 units for the month. "It looks like we've hit the mark with the new TSX sports sedan," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president, sales."
&
"In its first full month of sales, the TSX sold 1,835 units."
